“Charming, rustic lodge with views of Mount Rushmore”

My boyfriend and I spent 3 weeks in the Blackhills and the Badlands and this was probably the best lodging we stayed at. We stayed 4 nights in the Annie Talent room. It was by far the largest bedroom I have ever stayed in featuring two large double beds, a large jacuzzi tub in the corner of the bedroom and a seperate tub in the ensuite bathroom. It was was wonderful. I would have liked two comfy chairs or a couch in the bedroom so we could sit and read late at night (however, there was a comfy sitting area just outside on the landing). The log home was beautiful, cosy and homley. Art made a great breakfast every morning, especially the bacon...wow! Marylin was a wonderful hostess, very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the area. The view from the open deck porch of Mount Rushmore was great and the evening dessert every night was a great treat and always a surprise. This lodging beats staying at a motel in Keystone anyday! We'd love to go back and stay again someday.

Room Tip: There are only two rooms upstairs at either side of the long landing - both very large guest rooms a...

“The perfect B&B”

We stayed in the Peter Norbeck room at the Buffalo Rock Lodge for four days. My husband and I stay exclusively at bed and breakfasts inns, and the Buffalo Rock Lodge rates among our top ten.

Pros: The view, the view the view. Our room had a view of Mount Rushmore. The room was large and comfortable. Art's breakfast--particularly his bacon--is wonderful. Marilyn made dessert every evening to share with guests. The home is a lovely log home in a beautiful, quiet setting outside of town. Marilyn is available to share all kinds of suggestions for sightseeing in the area and restaurants.

Cons: Our room was on the lower level and we had someone staying above us. We could hear showers, toilets and walking. But at night, when everyone was sleeping, it was quiet. This could be a problem for late sleepers. Our shower was a little small, tucked into a corner.

Overall, I would stay here again and again. Marilyn and Art are gracious and welcoming.

Room Tip: The upper rooms are probably quieter if someone walking above you will be a problem.

“Better than we could have hoped for!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

My husband and I planned a last minute trip that happened to fall over Sturgis and thanks to a last minute cancellation we had the opportunity to stay at Buffalo Rock. Our room was wonderful, the home was beautiful, Art could not have made better breakfast if he ran a restaurant, and Marylin could not have been a more wonderful hostess. The earlier reviews talked a lot about hte food and now I know why! Here's a preview of breakfast if you are lucky enough to stay here: Our first day we had a strawberry banana salad, craisen nut muffins, individual seasoned eggs made in muffin tins, herbed hashbrowns (crispy perfection!), bacon with pecan crumble, and something else I'm sure. Our second day we had an egg dish with a flaky crust, potato pancakes with whole corn, cantaloupe and blueberry salad, delicious coffee cake. There is also a nighttime dessert every night, which is an extra treat! There were deer in the yard during breakfast every day and often at night too. Marylin will provide excellent directions for anything you want to do (truly turn by turn) with hints for where to stop for a snack or to enjoy a nice view. We were made to feel like we were old friends right from the start. As we were leaving my husband and I were already talking about how we would book future trips to the area around their availability rather than stay anywhere else. The BEST!!!!

“An absolute jewel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

My wife and I stayed with Carl and Marilyn for two nights in June and were delighted. Finding this rural, but ideally located spot amidst the tackiness and clutter of Keystone, SD was a stroke of good fortune and good reviews. Absolutely charming and beautiful location and ambiance. The deck overlooks Mt Rushmore in the distance- but even better -overlooks the Black Hills and all their beauty; especially at night with the stars filling the night sky.
Even though her website indicated a three night minimum stay in June Marilyn was gracious enough to accommodate us for two nights. We also arrived early and Marilyn graciously welcomed us and made us comfortable. We felt as if we were staying in a private home- and in many ways we were- as Marilyn and Carl have filled their lodge with mementos of their life and family history.

Our room was huge and had a jacuzzi tub(which, unfortunately, we did not use-too busy)
, a desk for our laptop-easy internet accessibility- and ample lamps and chairs- Only suggestion would be to have one or two comfortable chairs in the room for reading and relaxing. However, the area just outside our room and the beautiful living room were excellent places to relax- not to mention the deck!! The breakfasts were served buffet style and were wonderful- everything was home made and fresh. Each night Marilyn put out a dessert treat which made coming back even more special.

The value was outstanding- we have paid as much at Interstate motels with no charm.

Marilyn was the perfect hostess. She did everything from provide detailed driving directions to restaurant recommendations to places to see. We so enjoyed our conversations with her. Her family settled the area and she is a fount of information.

Truly a hidden gem!!

Room Tip: Al the rooms(only three) were great.

“Beautiful getaway with great hosts”

What a beautiful setting with a distant but clear view of Mt. Rushmore. The lodge is beautiful, rustic, but very comfortable and very home-y. Marilyn and Art provided everything we could possibly want, from customized driving directions for each day of our stay, to wonderful breakfasts and delicious evening desserts.
I would not hesitate to recommend Buffalo Rock to anyone who visits the Black Hills area.
