“Promised well but didn't quite deliver”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

We liked the idea very much of a comfortable country hotel growing and preparing its own food, and indeed this is what they did. However, we never felt a particularly warm welcome, and teh rooms while perfectly functional did not feel particularly special. In addition the food while using excellent ingredients was in some cases bland and in others excessively flavoured with the herbs which happened to be in season. Nothing was seriously wrong but it didn't make us want to come again.

“Not as good as its web site thinks”

Arrived at the hotel for a two night stay to find we were not expected, although we had pre booked.
We found we were the only guests staying at the hotel and were upgraded to a suite, which was nice. However the room was full of huge flies, some dead, lots still alive.
The complementary cake on arrival was non existant, and we were advised that dinner options would be limited!
Went to dinner and were informed of what we would eat, no choice at all. Long wait for food as the chef had gone to the vet. Food poorly presented, badly cooked and very dissapointing considering her reputation.
Breakfast was worse, little choice, cheap cereals, and the worst bacon ever received, mostly fat.
So poor decided to check out early. Shocking hotel.

“Wonderful Country Retreat serving Fabulous Food !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

My Husband and I booked this night away at last minute. Just an hours drive from us it was the perfect Country retreat. When we arrived, we dropped bags and straight away went off to explore the 130 acre estate, guided by Percy's very own sheepdog and tourguide 'Sophie' ! Being foodies and 25 years experience ourselves in the hospitality trade in Cornwall, we immediately recognised that Percy's is very special. We are used to dining at Rick Steins and Fifteen, but Percy's offer so much more. Attention to detail starts with producing its own produce onsite, most things being harvested only a couple hours before service, and Chef/Owner Tina cooks everything to order using her fantastic Swiss induction cooker. You don't get rushed to finish before a next sitting, the dining experience lasts all evening, and the food - we have have never tasted so much flavour. Percy's raises the bar for all other Restaurants ! It was really refreshing to meet two people (Tony and Tina) so passionate about their product, and they were the perfect hosts. We can't wait to go back !

“Restaurant not as good as it thinks it is”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2010

(Note: This is of the restaurant only) Very (!) late review but from the other comments here it does not as look as if much has changed. Service was painfully slow, starters and mains were fine (but not spectacular), desserts average, but the atmosphere was terrible. Sadly all down to the owner who just appeared incredibly patronising - although as others have said here it may just have been awkwardness. The fact that we still vividly remember this meal two years later is, in this case, not a good sign! There is probably a group of people who would feel at home here, but as people who simply enjoy good food in a pleasant environment we didn't.

“Not worth the money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2010

We received a wedding voucher for Percy's - a very kind gift indeed. As parents of an 18 month old child, we arranged a babysitter (i.e. grandparents!), booked a table for 8pm and looked forward to a special evening.

Whilst the food was okay - and no more than that - it was a long wait! Our starter arrived at 9pm and our main course arrived at 10pm. It is also worth noting that there were only 2 choices of starter (parfait and scallops) and main course (turbot and roast beef) on the menu, and 16 people in the restaurant......

We decided to leave at 10.15am and drive home (only 30 minutes but we were conscious not to take advantage of our babysitters).

What made the whole experience even more disappointing was the attitude of the front-of-house: a very patronising and disintered man. At one point he actually walked away whilst I was trying to explain that we found that the wait of 2 hours for a main course was rather long. He clearly that that we weren't used to eating out and were comparing his restaurant to a fast food establishment (which, of course, we weren't).

I agree with the comments from other reviewers about the lack of atmosphere.

All in all, definitely not worth the money (£40 for 3 courses, £7.50 for the extra cheese course). We could recommend so many great restaurants and pubs in this beautiful area, but sadly not Percys.
