“This is Benidorm from 1970”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2011

The rooms were adequate and clean buts thats the only real compliment I can give. Breakfast was terrible. The hot food was cold and the cold food was stale.
The swimming pool area is inadequate for a hotel of this size. With 400+ rooms and therefore a potential of over 800 guests, 135 sun beds are just never going to be enough regardless of the proximity of the beach.
Also, it would be better to book a hotel nearer to the town - even if you pay a little more.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel.

“THE MOST TERRIBLE FOOD (DINNER BUFFET) EVER EXPERIENCED”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2010

Got to admit we got in late.
Only dinner available was a buffet.
Food must have been there for about 4 hours!!!!! already.
Meat and fish was curly and black on the edges.
French Fries, fried 4 hours ago!!!!!
Breakfast slightly better. Spain is know for its availability of fresh bread all day.
Not so in this hotel!!!! Coffee was made out of tar!
This is the first time I ever comment on a hotel stay but it was so disappointing
I must warn others to avoid this place if they even think about eating there

“Good value, good location, nice hotel.”

At last an English review! Firstly I take issue with the previous review and glad I didn't read it before going. The reason the pool is small compared to the number of rooms is because there is 3 miles of glorious beach 10 yards from the entrance of the hotel! The furniture in our room was not old and the room was kept very clean by the maid. I would agree that some Brits may not rate it as 4* but it is certainly 3*+. The reception staff were helpful and they arranged some food for us after the restaurant had closed on our arrival as we got there later than planned. We weren't interested in the hotel entertainment as we like to walk and explore after dinner so can't comment on that. I would point out that we went on the 10 October and the resort in general was closing down although there was a Spanish bank holiday the weekend we arrived. I would say that the resort is ideal for families and older couples as the youngsters may find club/disco entertainment hard to come by. The other thing to point out is that at this time of year the hotel is mainly made up of Spanish and French pensioners and it's possible that some dishes on the buffet reflected this. There were very few English people at the hotel and amazingly the waiters weren't fluent in our language which we found refreshing but had no problem in getting what we wanted. We only saw one sign for 'English Breakfast' in the whole resort and and little in the way of 'Burgers', 'Fish and Chips', 'Roast Sunday Lunch' or other traditional Brit fayre, so yes folks it is Spain! What a joy! The overall cleanliness of the hotel was very good and the room and balcony we had was superb, roomy and comfortable. The food was very good although some dishes were a bit strange. Good breakfast with cold and hot choices. We found lunch to be the best choice including a paella on every day and there were plenty of salads for lunch and dinner. There is the possibility that the hotel was catering for the age group in the choices on offer. Desserts weren't up to much apart from rice pudding, creme caramel and lovely ripe melon. The hotel stands next to a beautiful 3 mile beach and the promenade is a delight to walk, with Benicarlo about 30 mins away and the heart of Peniscola 45 minutes. I would book the hotel again and recommend it to others. Top tip - if your driving the hotel is nearer to Benicarlo than Peniscola so head there.

“Old 4 stars hotel.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2009

I booked in rush my short holiday in Peniscola at this hotel without checking any reviews... big mistake.
If you dont really care about details it is an OK hotel. If you are common with 4 stars hotels, you wont like it.
Hotel's pool is way too small for its capacity, furniture in rooms old, not very clean, restaurant is huge but still looks small, not enough lighted, no ambience music or something to feel comfortable, just big crowd of people running after food...
Restaurant and Bar staff are decent and polite, except some romanian lady at restaurant which everyday was in a bad mood. Cant say the same about the Reception staff which is always stressed out and barely looking at you when they talk to you.
The Spa is decent and pretty large, was the only thing that I liked about it, probably cause it wasnt crowdy at all, people was still going to beach.
In the evening you can see only some shows for kids, which are cute at start but you get bored, and for older people there is some guy singing the same 4 songs every night...
In my opinion, Gran Hotel Peniscola is a family or 3rd age people's hotel. Probably when you go there with your family you are too busy with your kids to see the details...
I wouldnt recommend it for some mid 20's people at all.
In my opinion Gran hotel Peniscola is more like a family hotel
