The house looked pretty enough and we laughed off the usless signs that led us to various dead ends. However before we'd even unpacked we were threatened by the owner with "the kids better not wake up early and make any noise". I looked at my 1 year old. Then at my 3 year old... mmm...this was going to be a bit stressful...just what you need at the start of a holiday. We struggled in with the suitcases...again..."The kids better not make any noise!". We spent the next few hours shusshing them. Every time they got a bit boisterous, the landlady seemed to appear, glaring. The little jibes about restless children and mess continued. Evenutally, the comments about the rice on the floor after dinner did for us (he is one...he spills things...get over it). We suggested to the owner that if she didnt want kids then she shouldnt accept reservations with kids, but that it was all a bit late by then given that a) we'd arrived and b) we were paying, quite a lot for what it is.
Yes, the house and gardens are stunning. Yes the interior is very interesting. However, E3 for half a baby bottle of milk and being charged an extra portion for my 6 year old's seconds aren't exactly giving it away.
Other gripes:
- our 5 night reservation became a 4 night reservation because of a burnt out hard drive/blackberry problems/pick an excuse...
- no dinner the first night because the owner was too busy
- strong smell of cigarette smoke thoughout our visit
- cross-examination about whether we had left the keys every time we attempted to leave the hotel
- muzak tape (iuncluding we 3 kings in the middle of August!) at breakfast
- she stopped speaking to us after we complained; we stopped eating there
- Casa Donano Ribadeo
