Proximity of the campground to the park was helpful (it's inside the entry gates), though the RV parks just outside Mesa Verde are only minutes away from the Morefield turn-off. The stay was researched and planned on the Internet. The park doesn't assign spaces; upon arrival, guests are directed to search certain loops for their type of equipment; i.e., tent, RV, etc. A detailed map of the loops isn't available. We reserved a dry RV site as none of the RV hookup sites were available for our stay. The price paid is average to a little high.
The camp sites were well-spaced. However, the condition of the camp sites was poor. They were over-grown with weeds, and the gravel needs to be replenished. The equipment in the camp sites was inconsistent: some sites had pedestal grills, some had in-ground grills, both would have been appreciated. Some shade is available. Deer are numerous, and this is bear country.
The campground comfort stations have running water, sinks and flush toilets. They are readily accessible throughout the loops. A camper service sink with non-potable water is available for draining chemical toilets and gray water containers. A dish washing sink isn't available. The public water hydrants are too low to easily fill a jerrycan-style water container. Light emitted from the comfort stations can spoil star gazing.
The shower facilities are located in the central village. There are several shower stalls; they are private and very large. No wait was required for mid-morning showers. It was very off-putting to hear one of the park attendants swearing obscenely while cleaning the shower drains.
The office/store staff was unfriendly and somewhat unaccommodating. The selection of goods in the gift shop is limited. The Far View gift shop is a better choice. We didn't experience any of the park restaurants.
The nightly ranger talks were excellent, as was our experience with the on-site ranger office.
As a park, Mesa Verde is quite beautiful, and the archaeological sites are interesting. The $3 per-person ranger-led tours are good to excellent, with Long House being the most comprehensive. Plan to drive one-hour each way to visit the more remote cliff dwellings. The roads are currently under construction with loose gravel; delays are common.
