“Still a wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

We've been to this hotel at least 5 or 6 times, initially when it was owned by Leo and Isabel Benz. The first time we went back after it had changed hands, we were disappointed with the evening meal arrangement. The food had been coked and brought in from somewhere else and just heated up which wasn't at all satisfactory. We didn't allow this to spoil our visit though because the location, rooms, everything was still so beautiful and the people very friendly.
We returned again this year and were not disappointed. For me, this is still the best hotel in the area and excellent value for money. There is a new chef at the hotel and the food was lovely. The new management team couldn't do enough for us and we didn't want to leave.
I've read a lot of reviews from people who won't go back now that Leo is gone (God rest his soul) but as far as I'm concerned, it's very much their loss. The bedrooms are very elegant with soft, quality bed linen. The bathrooms are beautifully tiled and have lovely thick snowy white towels and everything is spotlessly clean. Breakfast was wonderful with a huge variety of choices, much more than there used to be. We've been to quite a few hotels in Asturias and Cantabria with Brittany Ferries over the years but this is still our favourite.
Maybe we were all spoiled by Josephs perfect garden and the chef who always gave us a huge choice of dishes and a plateful to match. But go there now, for the first time and you can't fail to be impressed. Yes, you get leaves in the pool but there's a net to remove them if you want. They fall from the overhanging hazelnut trees into the pool while you're swimming so it would be hard to keep it totally free from leaves. The birds circle around and dip their beaks into the pool for a drink while in flight which is lovely to watch.
As ever, next time we go to Spain, we will have at least three or four days in this lovely hotel before venturing into the unknown and taking our chance with some other hotel in a different location. We've been to a couple of shockers but I don't think I'll ever tire of Halcon Palace.

“Excellent location, tranquility, good food, cider and lots of outdoors!”

We stayed there 3 nights, on the occasion of the wedding of a friend. It is a very romantic place for such events, with breathtaking views and excellent set-up. There are plenty of opportunities for nature and culture, many small nice villages, Picos de Europa and beaches. The hotel staff was very friendly and the breakfast very nice. We didn't have the chance to dine there.

“Fabulous situation ruined by the evening meal”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2009

We were so disappointed to find that the situation re the food has not changed one year on.
Remembering an idyllic setting with comfy bedrooms and excellent food -we returned after 2 viists 6 and 8 yrs ago- we wished we hadn't.
Whilst the staff were friendly the personal touch from the previous owners had gone and the whole hotel had a "neglected " feel = the bedrooms were fine but the grounds were full of weeds, dead flowers/plants, un cut grass, broken sun loungers and generally uncared for.
As for the evening meal - it was a joke- we felt the food was , at best, being heated up- and then not always successfully- and that really they didn't want us to eat dinner there. We cannot believe that a reputable hotel chain lets this continue and to a large extent deteriorate.
Such a pity but we won't return.

“Food is very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2008

My wife and I stayed at The Halcon Palace in September 2007 and we rated it so highly that we returned in September 2008. We had read the comment written by an earlier reviewer in June 2008 referring to the poor quality of the food and we hoped it was just an isolated example, and that the chef had merely 'thrown his toys out of the pram' and walked out temporarily. Sadly no. Three months later the food for the hotel is being brought in from some distant source. It is far below the quality of last year. One night the once deep frozen fish had not been left long enough in the deep fryer and was cooked on the outside but raw for the most part in the middle. The food was sent back and a replacement offered. Breakfasts, by the way, were excellent
It saddens me to write this comment for this is a super hoel in all other respects. You will not find a more stunning location nor a more friendly and helpful staff.
There is a nice garden with pool and in the cave there two large ice buckets stocked with drinks and an 'honesty tab'. On being presented with my bar bill after four nights I thought I was being undercharged so queried the bill. It was correct and it was very, very reasonable.
Would we go back? No, because we have been twice. Would I recommend the hotel. For location, price, friendliness and tranquility....yes. If you like a gamble, have a go but just book the room with its accompanying excellent breakfast. Check out the situation regarding the food when you get there and if necessary the TableD'hote with wine and water was only 22 euros!!

“great location and hotel . poor food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2008

a pleasant hotel with great views from the garden and pool.
the only thing that spoils this hotel is the standard of evening meals. we ate the 1st 2 nights but discovered there was no hotel chef and that meals were being brought in from a neighbouring hotel several kms away. As there are no other restaraunts nearby this was a problem and the stay was not as enjoyable as it could have been.
Acrea is supposedly a quality hotel chain, with a good reputation for food (one main reason why I booked this hotel)
I do hope they get this this problem sorted for future guests , but in future I will be booking small family run hotels where pride and a personal service is paramount.
