“a quiet village with a nice pool”

While spending two months in Andalucia, Spain we took a short trip to the Sierra Nevada just before Granada. The Alpujarras lies on the southern slope of the Sierra Nevada and has a series of small villages that provide a good spot to begin hikes into the mountains.

Bubion is a village of whitewashed buildings with slate / tile roofs perched on the edge of the Barranco de Poqueria with views over the hills beyond.

Villa Turistica was built by the Tourist Board of Andalucia to support the small visitor base coming to this region. It's main attraction for us was a nice pool to find respite from the summer heat after a day of hiking. It provides a continental breakfast and has a dining room for dinner. The rooms are basic but have bathrooms and some have a nice view. This is a simple hotel and priced accordingly. I enjoyed a small vegetarian restaurant in town that also had internet access and seemed to be a meeting place for the towns more interesting folks. A nice break for a hike and swim.

“Quiet, relaxed atmosphere and good value”

My wife, 13-year-old daughter and I were traveling around Andalucia by car and stumbled upon the Villa Turistica while visiting the Alpujarras region. In October it was a beautiful place with the trees changing colour and a magnificent view down the valley, with the Mediterranean in the distance and Africa possibly just visible beyond. We paid 86 euros for a two-bedroom cottage with this magnificent view and a nice cosy fireplace, which we felt was quite reasonable. There are a number of good restaurants in the town of Bubion, and we tried one of those for dinner rather than the hotel restaurant. Breakfast there at the hotel the next day was rather meagre. I would echo the comment about security - our cottage had patio doors that could have easily been broken in through. Fortunately we did not experience a theft. Bubion is a very nice village which reminded me a bit of Santorini, being perched on the valley side as it is. The Villa Turistica was beautiful, quiet and a good value for the price.

“walkers only”

Area purely for avid hikers unless you want total relaxation, 3 buses a day, limited destinations, other villages very similar. Only 2 posssible walks for non hikers, to adjacent villages. One going to lower village via goat track. Horse riding available in village but limited english spoken. Several good tabernas in village also good souveneir shops ceramics, woven goods. Breathtaking views, lovely food in hotel, nice old village atmosphere in hotel in seperate villas. Some of the french doors need better security, as someone did get in our room on the last night and took our camera. Hotel grounds not suitable for elderly/infirm as lots of uneven steps, no porterage available..

Went here in August 2002 - great area for walking and wildlife.
Villa Turistica has a pleasant setting with modest but clean apartments.
Dont come here for opulent luxury but for reasonably priced, clean, pleasant accomodation.
The food was pretty good overall, with a choice of dishes and good wine and beer on offer. A variety of dishes, mostly spanish, we served, with plenty of choice. Plenty of Spanish people were staying here which I see as a good sign.
I would definitely come back but would recommend visiting the area in may or september/october if you are planning a lot of walking as even though you are a long way up in the mountains it can still get pretty hot in August. There was still snow up in the Sierra Nevada though.
Oh and if you are here with Thomson/Crystal they won't tell you that you can get the bus to Granada for a lot less than their tour costs, which we found out after we had been on the tour sadly.
