W Buckhead is not a large hotel. I think there's only 8 or 9 floors. There is a hip bar on the roof. You're paying for the chic, club-scene type feel of the property. Women love this hotel. My wife wouldn't stop using the term "clean lines." You sort of feel like a celebrity when you walk in. Then, when you checkout, you'll still feel like a celebrity with the amount of money you just paid. If you're good with splurging, go for it. It is a cool hotel. The Westin Buckhead is a 3 minute walk (toward Lenox Mall) and has bigger rooms where you get more bang for your buck.
I stay at a lot of Starwood properties (13 nights in January 2012 alone) so I'm used to being rewarded for my status. I'm also very familiar with the way SPG rewards their top tier guests. W Buckhead doesn't really do too much for you. SPG's policy regarding upgrades reads that platinum guests will be upgraded to the "best available room at time of check in." At most hotels this includes suites. The attendant at the front desk "upgraded" me from a wonderful to a fabulous or spectacular room. I think W markets those different types of rooms to make people feel like they're getting a huge upgrade when in reality you may have been upgraded from floor 3 to floor 6. If you check the size of the different room types on SPG's website for W Buckhead you'll notice that wonderful, fabulous, and spectacular are all the same room size. When I told the front desk attendant that suites were still showing available on their website she quickly brushed me off with "well there is a wedding here this weekend so..." If the room is available to be purhcased, it should be available to be given as an upgrade. I think the attendant could tell that I wasn't buying her wedding excuse so she appeased me by giving me breakfast vouchers in the restaurant (about $20/person).
The room itself was gorgeous. The room had a stocked mini-bar. Flat screen tv was accompanied by a DVD player. The bathroom had a European style shower with no door/curtain. The lady liked the large mirrors where she could sit for hours and do her hair/makeup/whatever women do to get ready. The bathroom had two robes and the nicer soaps/shampoos/lotions.
Valet parking was around $30. Dantana's located next to The Westin Buckhead (walking distance) has excellent food. Banana's Foster is to die for.
Again, the hotel is nice--just know what you're in for. Nothing is cheap. If you're looking for value, I don't know that this is your place. If you want to impress your lady and make her feel like Katy Perry...give it a shot.
