“Quiet. Manageable. Mini-Marriott Marquis?”
I'm writing during a 5-day conference at the Marriott Century Center, and I've been very pleased.
I stayed at the downtown Atlanta Marriott Marquis less than 2 months ago, and some comparison is inevitable. The Marriott Century Center, although it lacks the downtown location and amenities (spa) of the Marquis, has its own positive attributes.
This is a much smaller, suburban hotel with just 14 floors, although the footprint, like the Marquis, is built around a central triangular atrium, with rooms off of the atrium. This atrium, at least in late January, is very quiet, as opposed to the lively Marquis atrium.
The Century is in an office park off I-85 between I-75 and I-285. Because of the conference schedule I was at the hotel the whole time, and didn't check out the neighborhood, even though I had a car.
According to a desk clerk, local restaurants are a car ride away, but the hotel has a shuttle that will take guests to restaurants or drop off at or pick up from the MARTA station.
Another guest told me that a clerk advised her against running at night simply because there are few people around the hotel or office park area at night.
I had asked for a quiet room, as recommended by other TA reviewers. I arrived at noon, just before my conference started at 1:00 PM. I had reserved a king room, but none had been cleaned yet. A double queen was available, and I jumped at the chance to get situated before the conference started, and gave up the low floor and king. No loss. It was a very quiet room on the side away from the Interstate, comfortable and clean, pleasantly appointed, although nothing out of the ordinary for a Marriott.
A desk with pull-out table; dresser, easy chair; LG HD TV; a separate box with jacks for HDMI, PC Video, and RCA RGB and audio.
(You might check with the front desk if you plan on playing anything through the TV. A call to my room from the front desk, intended for a guest in another room, informed me that the jacks aren't functional because of the hotel movie service.)
On the 12th floor, there was excellent water pressure, and hot, hot water, which is all right with me.
There's a restaurant and bar, but I had room service each night because of the long conference schedule. The food from Room Service (In-Room Dining, they call it these days) was excellent. Salads were fresh and crunchy, soup was hot, and the servers helpful and pleasant. A 20% service charge is included on the bill, but interestingly, no separate line for additional tip-- which I always find irritating anyway. Bravo, Marriott Century!
The conference facilities were also comfortable, and audiovisual worked well. We ate breakfast and lunch at the conference, and there was plenty of fruit (strawberries and blueberries one morning), hot Starbucks coffee (there's a Starbucks in the lobby), and a nicely varied menu at each meal and break.
The fitness room, open any time with room card, had lots of cardio machines, at least some ellipticals (with iPad plugs) and weights.
Again, it's a suburban hotel, so there's plenty of free parking around the hotel.
I'm in agreement with other reviewers, and every one of the staff were helpful, courteous, and ready to serve.
I'll be back.
Room Tip: Yes, ask for a quiet room.
