I needed to book a 10 day trip to ATL for a downtown tradeshow. A quick Expedia search showed 13 hotels downtown from $77 - $359 a night. You guessed it - the Days Inn was $77 after which the price jumped to $179 for the next least expensive option...a Hilton Garden property, and the prices went up from there.
I wanted to keep my expenses down for this trip out of respect for my client but I was a little concerned because no one wants to stay in a cheesy hotel for 10 days straight. The reviews for this place were skewed to the extremes...either they liked it or hated it...but there were enough positive reviews to make me feel comfortable enough to give it a chance. Here are some details:
- Check-in took about a minute
- My room was clean and "serviceable"
- There wasn't a heavenly bed, but it was comfortable with plenty of decent pillows, and clean newish bed linens that stayed tucked in
- The rooms could've used new wallpaper, but it wasn't terrible...just older
- The bath towels were not huge and thirsty but neither were they old and thin
- The TV reception was weak and snowy so bring movies on your laptop
- The free breakfast was fine if you're a carb junkie (I'm not) with pastries, donuts, bagels, cereal, and biscuits, but they did have fresh apples and bananas
- They need to either take the fitness center off their website or revamp it. There is a stairmaster that works fine but the other 3 pieces of "equipment" are broken relics. BTW, there is a BodyPlex just 3 blocks away that offers a travelers pass and it's perfect
- From the front desk to housekeeping, the employees were just as nice as they could be - Vira, Otha Joe, Gigi, and the others were personable, efficient, and made my stay extremely pleasant!
Final verdict - If money is no object, then stay at one of the higher priced digs. I've stayed at them all over the years. Are they all nicer? Well, yes. Are they all worth 3-4x the price of the Days Inn? Absolutely not. So next time you're traveling on biz to downtown ATL and want to save a few bucks, then give the Day's Inn a try. If you're pretty well grounded, then you'll appreciate the value. If you're part of our country's entitled society, you'll be happier elsewhere.
