Positives
Wonder position and view, particularly from the restaurant terrace
Jessica on the front desk - always resourceful and pleasant, hats off to
View from the terrace
Jessica for dealing so well with so many less than happy customers -if you are polite, she will really try to help
Housekeeping - always clean towels and very clean room
The hotel manager for being so sympathetic and really trying to help when our travel company Sardatur was clearly so indifferent (see below).
Negatives (or where shall I start)
Transfer from the airport - arranged by the hotel, was by a small coach arranged by the hotel and took two hours forty minutes rather than the ninety minutes advised by the Sardatur representative who we eventually located at Olbia airport. This journey was punctuated by two things - a 15 minute smoke break for the driver, and a truly spine chilling final thirty minutes of the journey down hill to Arbatax. The latter was notable by the almost continuous use by the driver of the handbrake which gave rise to a very worrying beeping noise, and which resulted in a strong burning smell )presumably as a result of the brake linings heating up beyond normal tolerance. To be honest this was not so much bad as downright dangerous. The trip back to the airport was less hisr raising until we reached the airport - when we only had 10 minutes after arrival to check in and get to the gate.
Rooms - alll the comments from other correspondents on village rooms appear to be well founded - the rooms are built in local style with small windows and rather being set in the hillside to take advantage of the view are located in a shaded valley. We were witness to more than one unhappy guest refusing to accept the room offered, one of whom appeared to be quite prepared to drive straight back to Olbia airport on the day of our arrival - as we did not see the individual again, presumably this is what happened. The tower rooms are not necessarily any better - we had booked one which was at the base of the tower with a single tiny window and was evidently damp ( for reference it was number 14) - the floor tiles were covered with salt stains, only one of us could stand in the bathroom at a time. After complaining within a few hours of arriving, we were offered a more pleasant room two days into our stay. Best to go for a low numbered room which is closer to the top of the tower. Interesting to note that in the map provided by the hotel, the "borgo" rooms belong to the Arbatax are indistinguishable from hotel rooms - your guess is as good as mine as to what is being sold as what.
Other hotel facilities - the reception is small ( packed to the gills when a consignment of guests arrives) and there is a pleasant lounge area which is also the bar. The swimming pool is tired (selection of missing tiles), the cushions on the sun beds sweat stained, the sauna looks beyond it's sell by date. The "beach"area is small and not really big enough to accommodate all the guests who would wish to use it - together with several other couples we ended up perching on the floor or the rocks. There are no bar or other facilities at the beach so if you want a drink it is about ten minutes to reach the main bar. However, this has the benefit of avoiding possible bankruptcy.
Quality of food at breakfast and dinner was shameful for Italy - dinner was clearly cooked en masse - tasteless pasta, dried out chicken, ice cream on the menu but not actually available (in Italy!!) - an average british pub meal would have been much better cooked and significantly more pleasant to eat - how did they manage to achieve such mediocrity in a country famous for it's food?. Breakfast offering included consistently sloppy scrambled eggs, bread, croissants, cheese, ham, plus tinned pineapple, mixed fruit, carton juices (the orange juice was translucent) but fresh watermelon. Not exactly four stars. After discussion with the hotel manager, we were not charged for dinner on either of the two evenings we ate in the hotel.
Service in the restaurant was chaotic - the maitre'd was the antithesis of what he should have been, put aside any thoughts of a welcoming and congenial host, this individual appeared to be constantly in pursuit of his staff (indeed shouted at them across the restaurant in the middle of service), constantly interrupted them when they were attending to customers (the opening of our bottle of wine was delayed by one of these interruptions), rather than organising them properly. Most of the waiting staff were very pleasant and worked hard. Drinks typically arrived after service of food started, and it was clear no- one checked the food leaving the kitchen - on the second evening one course where we had ordered identical dishes appered with different contents on the plates. The restaurant was supposed to open at 7 but struggled to be ready by 7:15. Highlight of the restaurant experience was the delivery of our main course which rested on our table for about two minutes before being picked up and given to the next table, it would appear at the instruction of the maitre d'. Our own identical dishes arrived 30 seconds later. Almost a perfect rerun of one of the scenes in the other Fawlty Towers. Anyway after two disappointing but hilarious evenings we went elsewhere.....the hotel manager subsequently advised that thie maitre'd was moving on.
Drinks - following is a price check for week commencing 19 September for a 33cl bottle of the same local beer (in euro) - local supermarket 0,70, marina bar in Arbatax 2.50, bar in Arbatax Park 2.00, minibar in Monte Turri 3.50, bar in Bellavista Park (apparently associated with Monte Turri 4.00), bar in Monte Turri Hotel 5.00. Prize for the most expensive beer goes to Monte Turri. AND Possible world record for charging a higher price for local beer in the hotel bar than the minibar (has anyone ever experienced this elsewhere?). Possible explanation below under location possibly an example of the most cynical extraction of cash from punters with few real options.....).
Location - whilst the setting for the hotel is breathtaking, it is at the top of a very steep, hot climb 20minutes from Arbatax, and hence unless you have a car the hotel is isolated. Thus if you want a casual drink, there is only one option - the hotel bar. The hotel is also part of a 60 acre soulless development masquerading as a natural park. In the 60 acres there are literally hundreds of rooms, cottages, junior suites etc., with some fairly dog eared facilities interspersed amongst them. These include bars, restaurants (including a typical Sardinian buffet(?), a closed Pizza Place, and an uninspired and expensive a la carte restaurant), archery (closed) swimming pools, some beach areas, a zoo (containing a selection of local animals and....zebras(?) -we walked through this several times but did not meet anyone else in this area)), a deserted kids club, several outdoor entertainment areas include cinema, and an expensive spa (45 euro to use the thalasso therapy and pool areas - the resort appears to be attempting to reinvent itself on the back of the wellbeing fad). This resort shows signs of being designed by some unfocused individual who rather than providing simple good quality with a consistent theme or purpose had decided to throw the kitchen sink at it in the hope that something will work (little if anything does). The park appears to aspire in the direction of Club Med, with organised entertainment activities, but falls way short in all departments (starting with style) in terms of providing an experience and ambiance which is distinctive, and from what we experienced is staffed by locals who clearly need the work but are not entirely comfortable with being in the tourism / hospitality /service business (i suppose if you had to wear the somewhat ridiculous mock Sardinian dress to work for what is probably minimum wage and no tips, you might be less than happy with your lot). What this is like to stay in at the height of the season is best left to the imagination. So, in conclusion and for the avoidance of doubt, the hotels sits in the middle of an area developed for mass tourism with a distinctly family orientation, so if you were looking for the hotel to be an exclusive get away from it all retreat with a nice quality of service and ambiance, this is not it. The only "defence" that the hotel has against the hordes in the park is as a result of the hotel facilities being off limits to the inhabitants of the park.
Arbatax - for the avoidance of doubt, this is not the Sardinia of the Costa Smerelda, this is a small, down at heel port area, with several large industrial cranes in view from the north end of the resort and the so called Bellavista area. There are few shops, a handful of bars and a handful of restaurants - the pizza place at the Marina has good straight forward food prepared for you at reasonable prices. If you want something else you need to take a car or bus out of town.
Time saving hint - if you happen to book with Sardatur, you can save time by not bothering to complain to them if you have problems. Their representative is located at the north end of the island and does not visit the hotel, and indeed believes that Arbatax is only 90 minutes away from Olbia (50% margin of error). Requests to an individual named Nick Gallo in Sardatur to arrange for the representative to visit resulted in no response. The hotel manager also tried to tempt Sardatur to visit with no success. The customer service (or lack of it) proceeded by this allegedly specialist operator is shameful, unless their speciality is to ignore customer complaints.

Dear Guest,
The Management of the Hotel Relais Monte Turri and I thank you sincerely for taking the trouble of this long text about the hotel. Thank you for your positives comments.
Please allow me this opportunity to apologize for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay. The Hotel Monte Relais Turri is committed to providing our guests with the highest quality services and facilities. We sincerely regret we fell short of our goal in this instance. Your comments are important to the success of our organization, as we rely on you, our guest, to tell us how we are doing and how we can better meet your needs.
However, we would like to respond to some of your points mentioned that need for clarification important to us.
We have mentioned in this letter all your complaints. They are listed separately and the outcome of the investigations team’s inquire to each point.
Journey
it is a matter of fact that the hotel Relais Monte Turri it is located 160 Km from Olbia Airport and that usually it takes 120 minutes to reach the hotel. Unfortunately sometimes due to road traffic and speed limits, it takes more than 120 minutes. Furthermore the means of transport plays also an important role. A car can drive faster than a minivan. You mentioned that the driver stopped for a 15 minute smoke break which cannot be matter of reproach as the low foreseen different stop-breaks for the drivers during the journey. The 30 Km chilling road to reach Arbatax cannot be changed as the beautiful National Park of Gennargentu you must cross is a mountain road (1800 M.) The alternative to reach the Hotel Relais Monte Turri and avoid a chilling road is to land in Cagliari Airport. We apologize for the incorrect behavior of the driver and we would like to inform you that the responsible of the Staff has taken all the necessaries actions to improve the transfer service.
Rooms
The Hotel Relais Monte Turri is built in local style for what it concerns furniture but with Italians standard windows measures. In the hotel Relais Monte Turri there are different type of rooms. The tower room is in matter of fact a higher category than the garden room in therm of furniture and services offered. I regret that you could not experience this difference during your stay. The hotel “Il Borgo” is the rebuilt of an ancient Sardinian Village which it foreseen small windows to prevent keeping very warm rooms in the summer and this can sometimes dislikes. All the material used are local (mostly stone) in the respect of the environment.
Other hotel facilities
The reception is small and it is just the check-in area dedicated. Nearby the very nice welcoming hall with a fireplace, bar and piano corner, were the guests after having provided the reception desk with their documents, can enjoy their welcome drink or simply sit outside on the beautiful panoramic terrace to admire the breathtaking view before being overwhelmed by fatigue and retire to their rooms. This kind of warm romantic atmosphere it is the expression of a retreating hotel which recommend tranquility and comfort to our guests. The swimming pool is a relax corner for whose guests who want to avoid noise and confusion. At the actual state completely renewed. The beach area is a natural private rocky-sandy bay with crystalline water provided with a platform-solarium and facilities to enjoy the Sardinian sun. The hotel shuttle service allow our guests to visit different beaches in the surrounding area like Porto Frailis or simply enjoying the different beaches or swimming pools in the Arbatax Park area which our guests can move about freely as benefit. However, the hotel purpose it to put at our guests disposal different solutions which foreseen wild nature or comfortable beaches facilities.
Drinks
In matter of fact the internal Hotels prices are generally a bit higher than outside. What it makes the difference with costs between the Hotel Relais Monte Turri and a Supermarket or an outside Bar is the way to taste a beer on the private and wonderful panoramic terrace or a comfortable and retreating environment or simply to choose a different way to enjoy its own holiday.
Location
The Hotel Monte Turri it is not situated within the Arbatax Park complex. It has its own entrance and its own facilities. From the Hotel Monte Turri a 10 minutes’ walk allows to reach Arbatax Harbour. The access to the Villaggio to the guests of Hotel Monte Turri it is just to be considerate as benefit for whose guests that want to make of their holiday a difference. It is just matter of choice to spend time in the Villaggio. Anyway the Villaggio is very well connected with internal busses that leave each 20/25 minutes from one part to each other. The guests don not really need to walk.
Arbatax
We regret that Arbatax was not a place of your taste. Arbatax is a small and picturesque harbour in the Ogliastra region. The centre of this small town rises at the bottom of Cape Bellavista – territory enriched with the green-coloured Mediterranean scrub and famous for the characteristic red rocks and the masses of porphyritic granite located close to the harbour. A natural frame to this is the panorama of the surrounding mountains, the highest on the island. One of the most charming place in Sardinia. However, it is not possible to compare Costa Smeralda to Ogliastra. Two different places in terms of Landscape and holiday typology. The "Emerald Coast" is widely celebrated as a playground for the rich and famous. Ogliastra is celebrated for a wild and unique landscape. It is just a matter of personal choice.
Your willingness to share your experience is genuinely appreciated. I hope you will allow us the opportunity to serve your future lodging needs, as we would like the opportunity to provide you the level of service you expect from Hotel Relais Monte Turri.
Looking forward to welcoming you again in our Hotel on behalf of the General Manger and the Manger of the Hotel Monte Turri I send you my Best regards.
