I decided to take my gf away for her birthday, and she'd always wanted to go to Ireland, so on the recommendation of friends we headed for the beautiful surroundings of Mountshannon. I'd researched quite a few places to stay in the area, but one place seemed to have more favourable reviews than most: Hawthorn Lodge B&B. I booked up via email, and from the first point of contact they couldn't have been better. First rate responses to every enquiry I had made me certain that we woyuld enjoy our stay.
We arrived a little bit earlier than we anticipated on the morning but they didn't miss a beat. Ursula, who I had been in contact with via email, wasn't in just yet but her husband Noel was there. We were immediately shown up to our room, a very large room with en suite, exquisitely decorated. We made ourselves a quick cup of tea before Ursula arrived and came to talk with us. She recommended various places locally we could visit for dinner, and also suggested places of interest we might like to explore. She left us with a folder of details about the area, popping back quickly to deliver a plate of biscuits to have with our tea!
We explored the local area for most of the day, trying to take in many of the sights that Ursula had recommended. We popped back briefly to get changed before we went out for dinner, and again we were greeted by Ursula. She offered to book us a taxi if we so wished, and also a table at a restaurant, but we already had plans so we didn't accept on this occasion.
After dinner we headed back for bed. Again Ursula popped her head round the door as we arrived and said we were welcome to join them to watch tv in front of the fire, but we were pretty tired from our flight so we politely declined. We headed up to our room where we turned on the heated mattress before getting ready for bed.
After a very cosy night's sleep we headed down for breakfast. Ursula was there to greet us with a choice of cereals and fresh fruit. She brewed some coffee fresh for me, and made a huge pot of tea for my girlfriend whilst we ate. We grabbed some of her delicious brown bread (the recipe of which was located in the folder she gave us earlier. VERY tasty!) and soon enough out she popped again with a full Irish breakfast. I was so stuffed afterward but it was delicious!
Later that evening, after a day out with our friends, we headed back. Ursula again popped her head out and asked if we wanted to watch the end of the rugby with them. We'd caught most of the first half in the pub, but still tired from the flight, and possibly a little worse for wear alcohol-wise, we again had to decline and we headed to bed for another cosy sleep.
The following morning again we found ourselves with a huge delicious breakfast fit for a king! We were due to check out today, and although the signs said to be checked out by 11:30, Ursula informed us there was no rush and we could stay until whenever we liked. At around 1 we were fully packed and ready to head off, but with 8 hours until our flight, we though we'd head to one of the restaurants Ursula had previously recommended to grab something to eat. Noel insisted on giving us a lift as well, which was a final great touch to an amazing time. I can't recommend this place enough. The locality is amazing, the rooms are fantastic, the whole place is incredibly welcoming and the Hogan's make you feel like you're a part of their clan. A true delight.
