“Great location but hotel needs a little tuning”

It seems this hotel used to be a school building. It's a grey two storey building with little character of it own but it's by far the only hotel in the area. It's located in the center of Reykholt, a town so small you can miss it when you blink your eyes. The hotel is perfectly located if you want some of the more remote attractions in the area such as Hraunfossar and Barnafoss or the lava grot Surtshellir.

A very friendly receptionist who spoke English perfectly. The room was clean but showed no charm or atmosphere with little decoration and cheap furniture. The room we had was not so big and so was the bathroom that had little place to store two ste sof toilet articles. There was no hairdryer in the room but you can borrow one at the reception. A very thin pillow and no extra pillow to be found.

Breakfast was ok but a variety of cold cuts and fresh fruits. There is a spa and a (naturally) heated outdoor pool that you can use for free.

“Mixed feelings about my 3 night stay”

If you plan to stay at a hotel anywhere in the vicinity of Reykholt, you'll have to stay here--it is the only hotel in the area. It is a former school building converted to a hotel, and exudes all the ambiance that a mid-century concrete school building offers. It is adjacent to the Snorri museum, but nothing else. The nearest town is Bogarnes, 27 km. south. Because of its remote location, it is incredibly quiet. Several walking tracks are adjacent. I had the mis-fortune of having a "single" room. It was tiny, even by Iceland standards. The bathroom was (I measured it with a tape measure) 35 inches by 48 inches! To sit on the toilet, it was necessary to place one leg under the basin. Convenient if you are suffering from Montezuma's Revenge, but a bit of a hassle otherwise. The room had one twin bed, stained carpet, desk, chair, closet and place for 2 bags. Toiletries were limited to liquid soap. No clock, hir dryer, iron, coffee maker, etc. Lighting was good. Windows opened. Room had blackout curtains. Continental breakfast was adequate. Dinner (there are no nearby alternatives for dinner) was outstanding. The most glaring problem was that the hotel does not service the rooms for guests staying more than one night. Fresh towels are provided, but trash is not emptied; room isn't vacuumed, bed is not made. When I complained to management, I was told that to have the room serviced we would have to pay an additional fee! Outrageous!

“A hotel next to a cemetery, church built in 1885.”

We were staying at this hotel because our agent somehow booked us to an overbook hotel in Reykjavic. It took about 2.5 hours to drive from Reykjavic to Reykholt. What calmed me down was the scenery between Reykjavic to Reykhot. I wished I drove a small car so I could stop anywhere to take photos.

The hotel is more like a motel, basic but it's clean. They got all their hot water from geothermal, so the water has a very strong suphur smells. The water was a hard water so it took a while before I convinced myself that I have rinse all the soap from my skin.

It didn't seem there were any restaurant nearby so we ate at the hotel. The food wasn't bad but the soup was very salty. I think Icelandic like salty food. But the rest was OK. Breakfast also from the same restaurant.

Room Tip: If you don't like facing the grave, ask for room facing the parking lot.

“Small value at high price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

We stayed at the Fosshotel for one night on our way to Thingvellir. As we had no other option on this day, we spent 26.900 ISK on a very basic room (No. 113) at the hotel and were very disappointed. Shabby-looking bathroom, old furniture - not quite what we had expected. It seems that other rooms have been refurbished, though. We did not complain which was our fault but we can only recommend to bargain prices. Wellness area is nice and the breakfast was good. Yet, we would not visit the hotel again, not feeling welcome and treated like a guest!

“Hotel was Ok, food is terrible”

We stayed here due to the fact that the road to the south was closed. Its a modern concrete box pretty much in the middle of nowhere. We made the mistake of eating in the Hotel restaurant in the evening as there wasn't much choice. The food was dreadful. I wouldn't feed it to my dog. If you have to stay here take your own food!
