“Overpriced and Boring”

My wife and I stayed at this sleepy little hotel for one night during our holiday to Iceland. I was not impressed. I am painfully aware of the high costs in Iceland, but for what we got out of it, this place would not be my first choice, should I have the opportunity to choose again.
Here are the good things about the hotel. The staff are very friendly and quite helpful. In fact most of the people in Iceland are great to talk to, and this place is no exception. They can point you in the right direction for tourist things and other attraction to see in the area - the most famous being the huge waterfall, Skogafoss.
The breakfast which was included in the price was the standard buffet you see in other modern European hotels - a wide selection of cold and hot dishes. Great bread!
The location is prime for hiking and sight seeing of the south coast - extremely beautiful.

This is what I didn't like. The price of the dinner buffet. We paid about US$40 each for this buffet. While the buffet was fair in variety and quality, I think it was only worth US$20 each based on other places we ate in Iceland. The environment was sort of boring - I felt I was sitting in a church cafeteria eating some sort of potluck dinner. Not really all that impressive. The restaurant really needs some updating and better decor to make it warm and inviting.
The rooms were sufficient. They were clean, but very plain. There are only shared bathrooms. This is what we paid for as it was the cheapest option, but it seemed I was in a dorm room rather than in a hotel room.

Overall, it was okay, but again it wouldn't be my first choice. The whole hotel is in need of some serious updating. Its all very old and run down, which is sad because it has a lot of potential.

“Not as bad as we expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

We booked a night here simply because of its location so we knew what to expect. The Reception desk is in the main building but our rooms were in a building back down the entrance drive and on the other side of the road. We entered a typical boarding school - functional but worn. Rooms were basic but reasonably clean, beds were ok and toilets and showers were just along the corridor. However there was a large and comfortable lounge which was perfect for relaxing. Breakfast was in the main building and was very good - we have never seen such an array of cereals, nuts etc although we passed on the Castor Oil! Skogafoss is close by ( we'd been the previous evening when we were the only people there) and not far along the Ring Road towards Reykjavik is the new visitor centre for Eyjafjallajokull. We found this very interesting with good displays and photos from 2010. However the highlight was chatting to the lady working there who lives on one of the two farms affected by the eruption. Fascinating!

“Interesting Summer Hotel Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

I picked this hotel simply because it is the cheapest. This hotel chain in fact uses school dorm in summer. There is no private bathroom but at least there is a washbasin in the room. It is a comfortable stay. Breakfast is good!

“A bit disapointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

We were in the second building which lacks the wifi connection. Showers and WC were in a rather small numbers (2 of each for the whole floor) and the room is quiet small, really looks like a student room (as this is probably one).

“Good place to stop overnight.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

My husband and I visited family in Iceland and decided to do a drive round the country. We were looking for something cheap and clean. We have never tried this type of accommodation except for when we camped 2 years ago. I am often not keen on shared baths/toilets but we wanted cheap so that's what we booked. We booked 3 Edda hotels (Skogar, Hofn & Akureyri) all at about £50 per room per night so can't complain.

This hotel was just like a boarding house. We checked in at the main building and had to ring a bell for someone to attend to us. We stayed in the building next to the main building, which only had rooms, bathrooms and a living/common area. It was clean but the water in bathroom smelt so strongly of sulphur!

This hotel is in the middle of nowhere but just round the corner from Skogarfoss (the beautiful waterfall). We saw the waterfall and climbed the steps to the top, which was a delight. The hotel is not far from Eyjafjallajokull - the volcano that erupted last year. There was a lot of volcanic ash around so we collected some. You can buy the ash in shops for about 9€.

There was only one place to eat nearby - some sort of travel centre for hikers, glacier climbers etc. You can get information from this place for outdoor activities. There was a small shop and the restaurant was more like a canteen with quick meals like soups, meatballs, fries and salads. We ate here in the evening and it was nice enough and not too expensive.

We would use this hotel again but would probably shop at a supermarket for food before arriving in this area as there is nothing really. The dinners at the hotel were too expensive for our budget so it was not an option to each there.
