The hotel is not much to look at from the outside only because it is not meant to be a distraction amidst the beautiful scenery around... A gorgeous view of black mountains, blanketed by snow at their peak, a lake and a nature reserve where birds drop in...
There is an outdoor hot bath that is delightful to be in when you soak up the beauty of nature around you. You forget that it is below 10degC air temperature before you got into the water!
The rooms are nicely and neatly done with your own French doors opening to your own little patio.
Food is top class with local produce such as mountain lamb and langoustine. The owner also prepared skyr for breakfast exactly how her family would have done it at home!
If you are the type of traveler who want to soak up what Iceland has to offer without really wanting to risk not having a good meal after a long adventure-filled day, you are guaranteed a good stay in Borgarnes.
What's nearby: Snaefellsnes Peninsula, little town of Borgarnes to get some local culture at the Settlement Centre and learn about the Vikings and Sagas (and who would have thought that there is also a Filipino restaurant in town!), little treks to the Children's Falls (Barnafoss) and the Lava Falls (Hraunfossar).
Enough to stay overnight before heading east-south to see geysers, more waterfalls (Gullfoss, Oxara falls) and the historically significant Thingvellir/rift valley of the mid-Atlantic ridge.
Next rest stop recommended: Fludir!
