We stayed in Super 8 Motel (Anchorage) the last night of our Alaska trip, since most of the other hotels we wanted in that area were fully booked. We thought that since it was only for a night and was close to the airport, Super 8 should be an okay place if all we needed were a no-frills place with basic amenities for a night's rest. Boy, were we wrong.
First, the room did not meet, in my opinion, the basic cleanliness standards. The carpet was obviously not vacuumed, as there were leftover peanuts strewn all over the floor around the round 'dining' table. I thought I could overlook that. Then we found a big hole which looks like a cigarette burn on the bed comforter. When we flipped up the comforter, we also found a couple strands of hair on the bedsheet, which to me looked like it was never replaced as there were a lot of creases in it. The bathroom looked perfectly fine though. The pillows were also out of shape and gave me a neck ache in the morning.
I then called the front desk requesting for a change of room (about 1.5 hrs after checking in) but was told by the staff that there were no more rooms available. When I told her how it appeared that the sheets and floor had not been cleaned, I was in turn questioned why I checked into a room that was not clean in the first place!
When I then requested for a new set of sheets, I was told to wait around 20 mins for the shuttle bus driver to be back as she couldn't do anything about it (I was appalled that front desk did not actually have keys to the laundry/ amenities room). To make things worse, she actually said "if you don't like it here, go somewhere else."! I got NO apology from her, nothing. What kind of attitude was that?? (the front desk lady that served us during checkout in the morning was a lot nicer and professional though)
Thankfully, the shuttle bus driver/ janitor was very prompt, helpful and courteous, but that wasn't enough to make up for the shortcomings we'd experieced.
Second, we got a room that was directly across from the guest laundry room, the noise from which (opening and shutting of doors) basically kept me up most of the night. If you must stay here and are able to pick a room, ask if it is across from or next to a laundry room.
Overall, the experience was one of the worst I've had, due largely in part to the cleanliness (or lack of it) and bad attitude from the front desk. I would spend a little more and stay somewhere else, just like what I was being told!
Room Tip: Rooms next to laundry rooms are noisy
