“Disappointing”

I booked with the Howard Johnson Plaza because I had stayed there before when it was a Holiday Inn, and liked it very much. Their website said that they had an airport shuttle and a restaurant, and I remembered the restaurant as being very nice. So I arrived in Anchorage by train and trudged up the hill in the snow to the Howard Johnson Plaza. When I checked in, I told the lady that I would need to take their shuttle to the airport in the morning to pick up my rental car. She told me that they don't have a shuttle. I told her that their website says they do, and that's why I booked this hotel. She said they had it when I booked, but no longer. So I asked her what time breakfast would be served, and she said they closed their restaurant a week ago. She offered to reduce my daily rate from $127 to $79, which I appreciated, as it would more than cover my cab fare to the airport. When I opened to door to Room 333, I was hit with a blast of very hot air. The heat was on full, and I had to turn it off and open the window to cool it down. It was 5 degrees outside, and I had to keep the window open for half the night. There were no facial tissues in the bathroom. I turned on the water and it came out dark brown. The towels were once white but were now gray. Next time I'll stay somewhere else.

“BED BUGS”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

BED BUGS awful experience. The manager Ed, was very rude and arrogant. His responds to me when I asked him to pay for another hotel room, and the cost of cleaning all of my belonging was "NO I DON"T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING FOR YOU, IT'S NOT MY PROBLEM". He refunded my money for that night and he felt that was all he had to do. The man was cold and heartless, very bad business person, no mortal ethics.

“BEDBUGS”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

Friends of ours stayed at this hotel last night and woke up with bedbugs on them! When they went to the front desk clerk she said, "Oh yah, we've been getting some complaints about that".... WHAT!?!? Until they completely tear out the beds and replace carpeting, I would avoid this hotel.

“Has seen better days but good stay”

After reading the reviews I was very worried about HJ but it turned out to be better than expected. Definitely a $60-80 dollar hotel, if you are paying more it might be wiser to look somewhere else.

Pros:

Location
Big Rooms
Cable TV
Wi Fi ( Fast, it works )
Free Parking ( Winter Time )
Budget
Friendly Staff

Cons:

Hard Bed
Appearance
Long Hallways ( The higher the room number the longer to get there. Hotel is huge )
Some Noise here and there from the hallways

All and all I would definitely stay there again at the same price range ( $60 - $80 )

Room Tip: Choose a low number room Ex. 101, 205 instead of 275, 390 Do not choose smoking rooms ( very dirty...
