The Parkwood Inn was wrought with problems from the moment we got there. The guy behind the desk had an attitude that made me feel as if I was asking for more than I should when I wanted a top floor room, even though they had rooms available on that floor. When we entered the room we finally got, we found that the deck door knob was broken and could not open the door. The maintenance guy came up a while later and replaced the knob which was fine. While I was unpacking our kitchen things I found brown sticky gummy stuff all over the cupboards, drawers and floor. Everything was filthy and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. When I opened the oven, I found a greasy cookie sheet with moldy pork chops on it. I called the front desk and told them about it, but they didn't send anyone up to get it, so I later delivered it to the office. The biggest issue though was the toilet. The first night we noticed that the toilet didn't flush very well. It had very little suction power. It immediately plugged up and almost over flowed. From that point on when flushed, the toilet bowl would fill to capacity, and then drain down slowly. We were afraid to use it. I called the front desk again, and told them of the problem, asking for Drano or a snake, or to have the maintenance guy come up and fix it. I was promised that the maintenance guy would would come up. I waited for two days before he finally showed up, and when he did, he arrived with a pencil in hand. He sat on the side of the tub, flushed the toilet, took the back off, and proceeded to spend at least 15 minutes just staring at the toilet. I finally asked him what the prognosis was, and he replied "It seems to be working"..... Yes indeed it did flush but not well enough to flush more than a small piece of toilet paper down, and labored with that. He then said that he thought it needed a larger tank... OK I'm no expert on the subject, but it seems to me that a larger tank would simply put more water in the bowl which was already filling to capacity. I couldn't see how a larger tank would increase the toilets flushing power. My husband was there with us, and he suggested that the guy use the toilet and see how well it worked for him........... The maintenance guy left saying he needed to go get tools. So my husband and I wait. It was 7PM when he left, and when 9PM rolled around with no maintenance guys return we start calling the front desk again to find out where he might have gone. We were told he had left the building............ So the toilet saga continued the next day. I called the front desk early the next morning making the same requests I had before. Drano, snake, or maintenance man. I was promised that the maintenance man would take care of it as soon as he got in. I waited all day... finally late that afternoon he shows up with a bucket. He poured bucket after bucket of water into the bowl throwing toilet paper in with it. Nothing improved... He finally removed the toilet from it's mounting, but oddly didn't use the snake in the pipe while it was off. All he did was cut away some of the mounting mold, stick the toilet back on, and flushed it, saying "there!! It works now!!!" It did NOT work. It was no better than it was before. This maintenance guy didn't seem to know what he was doing at all. He didn't even know how to use the snake. I figured it out myself, and showed him how to use it. It was all just a wild fiasco, and I was thankful he left when he finally did.
The front desk did offer us a different room, but it took us two days to move all of our stuff in the room we were in. We were staying at the Parkwood while we waited for the apartment we had leased to be available, and had quite a bit of clothes for my husbands work, personal items, food etc. Besides that, I had spent 2 days cleaning this room. I had cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom, the bathroom, and tables and chairs which also had sticky stuff on them. I wasn't about to move to another room where I would have to clean everything again. My husband and I decided that we would hobble through the following 4 days that we had remaining to our stay at Parkwood, and use the bathroom elsewhere when more substantial use was needed.
The internet connection didn't work more than half the time. The TV's plug in wire was jerry-rigged with tape and zip ties... looked very unsafe.. the bath tub didn't drain. My husband took a shower the first morning we were there and it took 3 hours to completely drain. The place was filthy. Broken down furniture, no pots and pans in the kitchen and what dishes were there were thin plastic that one might use for a picnic party. The coffee pot took 45 minutes to perk, there was no hot water in the bathroom sink... I could go on.... There were a couple good thing about the room: It had a walk in closet that held most of our stuff which was nice, and the back deck was filthy, but it was nice to have. The Parkwood could be a really nice place. It just needs better management, maintenance, and house keeping.
I had spoken with the manager both in person and on the phone several times about the toilet issue and some of our other complaints, so when we checked out and I asked to speak with her, she was well aware of the situation. In most places a hotel guest would be given some compensation for any trouble they might have experienced, but not at the Parkwood. Since it wasn't offered, I asked to speak with the manager again, and when I asked for some compensation she replied "For what?" I was taken aback... I reminded her of the things I had talked with her about before, and she asked me if I had a written list..... I didn't see a positive future, so I gave up. I think if they had compensated us I might not be writing this review, or at least I wouldn't tell as much, but I truly feel that this hotel lacks in so many ways including customer relations that it deserves to be reported.
