In planning our two week trip to Alaska we knew we needed to rest on arrival from our trip from Boston. We wanted to get our legs moving with some hiking, and then acquaint ourselves culturally with Alaska. We're quiet folks, and it seemed that the Camai would suit us. We were rewarded handsomely.
The Camai is in a tucked away residential area, and while the written directions are accurate, another reviewer's advice to visit Mapquest/Google Map etc. is well taken. We stayed in the Fireweed Suite, a renovated basement space that had all the room two over-packing hikers needed to spread out and not feel crushed. The cool nights kept the room at a nice temp during a hot spell (80+F) days . Our sleep was deep and restorative.
Caroline and Craig Valentine are not professional hoteliers, but are genuine, intelligent folks who provide a warm welcome and a fine breakfast. Speaking of which, the three we had were delicious and well prepared. We always left the table ready for the day, not needing another bite until well into the afternoon. Deserving special mention is one morning's buttermilk-oat pancakes with birch syrup.
Adding to the the overall comfort is the garden that Craig and Caroline have out back. It's a nice place to become acquainted with Alaska's summer abundance and how locals appreciate that brief season.
Do you need a place to recover and recuperate from a long journey from the lower 48 to Alaska's beauty? My wife and I heartily recommend the Camai B&B. With some good luck that won't be long.
