We stayed at the Anchorage Walkabout B&B for three nights at the end of May/beginning of June. It is a large, private house converted to B&B use, located in a residential neighborhood. Some guests stay in an adjoining house.
A cab from the airport cost about $12 for two. Guests enter by climbing a flight of stairs on the right side of the house where a door leads to the kitchen and the office area. There is a notice board for late arriving guests with directions to the rooms and a place to indicate what time you would like to have breakfast. We had been advised to leave our luggage at the foot of the stairs until we learned our room assignment. When we arrived, we easily found the information and room key .
We occupied the Russian Room, a nice-size room with queen bed decorated with memorabilia from the owners' trip to Russia, on the ground level. There was a large closet and a chest of drawers with a small TV on top. Our private bathroom was just outside the room. The entrance to our room and bath was a hallway which had drapery to deliniate it from the public area. There was also a very living room and small dining area with fully equipped kitchen on the same level available for guest use. Board games, magazines and books and a telephone with free local calls are found there too.
A washer and dryer were located in the adjacent garage and could be used after 4 p.m. for the very nominal fee of $1. The other room on the same level, called the Piano Room and containing a piano, was a very large room with several beds suitable for a family or for several adults. To access the shower room and toilet room for the Piano Room a walk across the common room to the garage area was required. Everything is immaculately clean.
Up one flight of stairs, on the main level was the large kitchen and breakfast room. While we were there, an adjacent open porch was being glassed in to add to the space. Breakfast included a selection of cereals. bread and English muffins which guests can toast on their own, and cooked to order eggs with bacon or other meat. One day our eggs were served with reindeer sausage, a tasty local specialty. Juice, tea, hot chocolate and brewed coffee are available. Guests who are departing earlier than breakfast is served are provided with a nice take away bag if they notify the kitchen the previous day.
The owners, Sandy and Terry Stimson, are friendly and helpful. Sandy welcomes guests, provides information on local activities and oversees breakfast which is prepared with the help of a cook. Terry was gracious enough to drop us at at the train station on his way to work, the morning we were leaving.
We walked to the downtown area and back several times. It's a fairly long walk but pleasant. One could also take a cab and a bus stop is across the street. Other areas of the city, which is quite spread out, can also be reached on foot. The B&B has a few bikes that can be borrowed and if you have a car parking is available. There is a very nice, upscale grocery store a few blocks away where we bought some prepared food for dinner which we ate in the common room.
We would highly recommend the Anchorage Walkabout to people who enjoy staying at B&B's as opposed to full service hotels . The room rate was reasonable and we received a discount for staying 3 consecutive nights.
Note: It is customary in Alaska to leave shoes, boots at the door and wear slippers or socks in the house.
