So 1 week in to a 2 week stay. Arrived late and the front desk staff was good. Got us in quick was polite etc. First blush impression, decent, but that quickly fades as you stay.
The problems begin with the room having plastic bags over the smoke detectors. Not sure why but I took photos and a mental note. Window's lack working latches thankfully the room is on the 2nd floor. Put the "do not disturb" sign on the door. Went to class, came back and someone had entered my room and removed the bags on the smoke detectors. the "do not disturb" sign still in the door. Room was not attended to so it was not for "maid" service that you will get once per week of your stay. I also set the latches on my belongings in such a way to see if anyone opened my stuff. Now twice my suit case's and camera bag have been opened. I don't leave anything of value in my room and I take pictures of how I left it, now twice my belonging have been rifled through.
The walls and floors are poorly insulated so you will hear a LOT of noise if you have the misfortune of having a neighbor that is loud. 3 am stomping on the floor 4 days in a row.
The grab and go breakfast is lacking but functional if you need it. Coffee and tea, granola bars and apples. That's about it. They do try to keep the coffee stocked but I noticed a few times that people went up to get a cup and they either had to wait for staff to refill or they went without.
The kitchen is basic and looks serviceable if not for the fact that both burners are bent to crap and wont sit flat without a bit of weight in the pans. The dial to turn on power is a nice safety feature but is very dirty. The fume hood/fan doesn't have a filter nor does it vent anywhere. so you can move the smell and moisture around your room but it wont leave it. The fridge was not turned on so I had to set the temp. Handle is about to fall off and the unit is not balanced on the floor.
The water supply has a significant amount of chlorine in it and you can both smell and taste it.
The bathroom is actually a very nice little unit, combined shower tub, clean and nice shower streams. For the first time in any hotel the massage function works, a decent supply of TP and tissue. Only a few bars of soap, either ask at the desk for shampoo or bring your own. Well stocked with towels has a nice laminate floor, looks new.
I am a non smoker however I can smell that someone that stayed in this room in the past was. The smell is subtle but there, not the type of smell from an occasional use, its more like they painted the walls over a room they used to let people smoke in. It doesn't stink but you get the smell of it from time to time, if its not the walls then its the AC unit. Paint looks clean and new
While I admire a business from setting the room to a temperature that prevents them from wasting energy I don't appreciate having a room at 85 degrees and the AC system taking 6+ hours to bring it down to 73.
Lighting is another issue. For a state that has about a 6 month "dark" season the room lighting is super econo low light. It won't help you if you have seasonal affective disorder or just like a bright room. The wall color of a tan/brown with lots of dark chairs floors etc doesn't help.
Sofa and chairs look clean and feel decent
If you value technology like I do then pay attention.
Internet is NON EXISTENT, 1/2 megabit down, less up. pay $20 for "UP TO 2 meg" you get 3/4 of a meg and it still wont let you do things like even watch a basic youtube video. Like others if you pay your just wasting your money and time. Static web pages take ages to load, streaming content doesn't work. The issue I have is that I am a computer specialist and I NEED to be able to work remotely. I didn't have the choice on this room, work selected it. They have now every day asked for assistance and I either have to use my personal cell phone plan tethered to my laptop burning my data-plan or not work. I have already gone through my 10GB plan in a week so now I can't do anything. Latency on both "free" and paid are 230+ms with more then 15% loss. If you need the internet get a different hotel. Because of this one issue I WILL NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN. If your catering to long term stay, and you charge for internet then provide it, plain and simple. I even contacted several local providers and found that Alaska Communications Services (ACS) offers non metered business internet access in the speed of hundreds of megabits per second for only a few hundred dollars a month for this very reason. Unfortunately they can't install a line just for me, nor in under a week. This hotel chain should invest, If you read this mr/ms local manager then GET SOMETHING THAT WORKS PLEASE!
They have two TV's in the room basic service with one of the channels saying "your smart does not have authorization to view this channel", one of the tv's has duplicate channels (3 and 9) there is a dvd player on one of the machines so I guess I will have to give redbox or something a try.
Beds, well I am overweight by about 50lb or so and the beds don't have enough support for my body, they appear clean but if you pull back the first layer you will find animal hair, dirt and long hairs. The mattresses feel well used but for a place to sleep it works OK. My room has two queens and both feel about the same. Each pillow is different. I have stayed at a number of hotel's and almost all of them have a standard pillow for the properties, This place is all over the map. Some are soft, some firm, some noisy, others quiet. One feels like its a plastic toy wrapped in a cloth pouch. None are conformable unless your tired. What they lack in comfort they make up with quantity.
Staff: I have only had a few interactions and each has been nice. They all appear neat and treat people respectfully and they do try to accommodate.
Overall I would stay here if I needed a spacious room with two beds and a kitchen and friendly staff. I won't stay here again because of the internet, noise, smell, uncomfortable beds, and poor lighting.
P.S. I would attach photos but the hotel internet won't let me. I will update if I can when I get a real connection.
