My wife and I stayed at the HGI in Anchorage,Alaska for three nights in September of 2011. As a mid-tier property in Anchorage, I can definitely recommend this property. This property is well located as it is only a 5-7 minute drive from ANC (Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport) and a 10 minute drive from downtown Anchorage. The area immediately surrounding the hotel has a large variety of eateries from fast food through various (price) levels of sit down restaurants. A large multiplex theater is also just a 2 minute drive from the hotel.
The hotel itself is clean and well maintained. As is standard for HGI properties, there is a small shop next to the checkin counter with snacks and various toiletries. There is also a restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner (and I assume lunch but we never went for lunch and we were always out during the mid day hours). The breakfast had a good selection of morning breads but I think it would be nice if they had some non-pork breakfast meats as there are many people (Muslim, Jewish, etc....) that do not eat pork and would appreciate a meat option in the morning. We had two dinners there (one through room service and one actually in the restuarant) and the quality was above average (though a bit pricey, especially through room service). The crab cakes are actually quite good and the portion (though it is an appetizer) it is large enough to be a full meal.
The fitness facility is adequate as it has weights (both free and a machine), a couple of treadmills, a couple of ellipticals and an exercise cycle. There is a pool next to the fitness room which looked nice (but I did not try it so I cannot comment on the temperature). The business center had two computers which were a bit slow but there is also wifi capability in the rooms.
The room itself was clean and of average size. There were no in-room movies but those are usually a bit on the expensive side anyway. The adjustable bed was nice and comfortable. The room lighting could have been a bit better and while the maid service was daily, I think we were in a bit of an ironing board war as it was not put away once during our stay.
For the three night stay, we paid approximately $450 (taxes included) with an advanced purchase prepay rate, so I definelty could not complaint about the price. Overall, I Would recommend the HGI in Anchorage and if I return to Ancorage, I would not hesitate to stay here again.
