High season in Alaska, lodging is expensive. That makes Caribou Inn appear to be a deal. I think we paid $60 (before tax) for our night here. We learned of this place from one of the Alaska travel guide books. I wish I could remember which one.
It is not an exaageration to say, however, that we might have gotten a better night sleep had we saved our money and slept on a bench in a park somewhere.
This hotel is situated on a busy corner with major streets running along two of its sides and is otherwise surrounded by a parking lot. Remember, in May, the sun shines until quite late at night, so people are up and about and the car, motorcycle, and bus noise here was incessant and impossible to block out. Even with ear plugs, it was so noisy, I could not sleep.
Even my husband, who has no trouble sleeping, could not sleep here. On top of that, we were at ground level and our windows would not lock, so we did not feel safe here either.
This is downtown Anchorage, a big city, the biggest city in the state of Alaska, and as in any big city, you don't really want to sleep in a ground floor room with windows that don't lock.
The place was really not in great shape, and for those of you who have ever lived in a student co-op, this was kind of like a co-op. It's condition anyway. If you can get space, stay at the nearby hostel instead. Even if you have to take one of the bunk bed-shared rooms there, those are still better than this. I stayed in the hostel in 1996 and couldn't sleep in the shared room due to some guy snoring (I didn't have ear plugs that night), but at least I felt safer there.
