“Better ask for a smoke-free room!”

DH and I were in Alaska and needed a place to crash in Anchorage for just 1 night when we first arrived. I booked this hotel through Hotwire and got a great deal. However, we were not asked whether we wanted a smoking or non-smoking room.

The common area is OK - nothing to gawk at, but not awful, either. The receptionist was very nice and gave us our key upon checking in. We made our way to the room and were immediately overwhelmed by the most awful stale cigarette odor. We stayed in the room for about 2 minutes before realizing we couldn't endure the smell any longer. I went to the front desk to ask for a room change and thankfully they had ONE non-smoking room they moved us to (I will at least praise them for being willing to move us). Had they not moved us, the smell was bad enough that we would have forfeited our payment and gone to a different hotel.

Once in our smoke-free room, the experience was a bit better. However, there were no toiletries in the bathroom (shampoo, etc.). I wasn't expecting that, and I was glad I always carry backup travel sized toiletries!

All in all, if you're a budget traveler, this would be OK for you. Very plain, no amenities - but breakfast is included in the morning and you can get the room at a great rate. It just wasn't really our style.

“Response to "The rudest night front desk guy"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

We were there during that time at the hotel and I must say, this user gives only half the story. We were there to get medical treatment for my grandfather and we were in the business center when it all happened.

The lady lies, they were sitting in the lobby for couple of hours talking and the front desk guy asked them if by any chance they parked in the lot without a permit, as the tow truck was towing away a car and he couldnt find the registration info for the vehicle under any guest's name. She and her friends said they parked in the lot because it was empty, how stupid.

She makes it out like they are angels and did nothing wrong, they were using the F word at him and calling him a D*** and what not. If I was that guy I would have kicked them out of the hotel then and there.

If you are going cuss someone out, dont go back begging for a favor.

We had a chat with him after it happened, he is strict but very polite and nice and never had any problems. Other guests were very happy with the security he provides for the hotel especially when there are families staying with children.

It is people like this reviewer that gives hard workers a bad rap.

6. No phone book in the room.
7. Asked for a new key card and was given one from the front desk without her checking my id or asking any questions other than...what room are you in? By the way, the key card didn't work any better than the previous one.
8. bed was advertised as a pillow top, It wasn't a pillow top.

“The rudest night front desk guy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

The night guy at the Front desk at the extended stay was horrible. My friends and I met up to stay with a friend who was already staying at the extended stay. We knew we had to get a parking pass and it was 1st on the list of things to do, however, since we had not seen our friend in a long time we got to chatting in the lobby in front of the front desk and forgot about it momentarily. When we had decided we needed to go out to the car to get our toothbrushes and PJ's he informed us that we were about to be towed! We flew outside to speak to the tow truck guy, who told us that the front desk guy was supposed to try and locate the owners of the vehicle as best as he could, and when he couldn't he called the tow truck. He had been sitting in front of the front desk the entire time, and he didn't say anything to us until we were about to go out to the car to get our stuff. He came with us to talk to the night clerk and see if he would allow him to let our car go, but the man refused and said it was not his problem, and that we should have been responsible. He argued with us, and cursed at us and told us to leave him alone. The tow guy finally decided to let the car off for only $100. Instead of moving the car to the street, my friend went back inside to purchase a parking pass, but the night clerk refused. There were only 3 cars in the parking lot at 2 in the morning and he insisted that he was sold out and would not sell us one. I've worked at hotels, and if I were the manager I would have been astounded at how this guy treated the guests. There was no reason for his hostility nor lack of compassion. Also, the complimentary breakfast is only hard bagels, awful apples, and gross coffee. And the suites they speak of are tiny rooms with a few extra things.

“A safe, downtown hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

The security here was tight, but not intrusive. The room was comfortable, clean and very quiet. The folks at the front desk were very helpful in that they pointed out that after 6:00 p m on Friday we could park on the street for free instead of paying for parking. The breakfast was excellent.

Room Tip: ASk for a "no smoking" room.
