“Don't Stay Here!”

I want to warn anyone who may be visiting Anchorage NOT to stay at this motel. I would hate for someone to base their impressions of our great state on this dive. I'll just say that I work in the public service industry and that this motel has a lot of "issues". Enjoy Alaska, even if it costs a couple of extra bucks!

“Anchor Arms Hotel in Anchorage - a warning”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2007

Our experience of this Hotel was appalling and the wording on internet advertising was misleading to say the least.....
"attracts a crowd of economizing tourists and hard-working professionals" - we wonder which type of "professional" was meant by this??? The place was all "sleaze" and itinerant workers. We didn't see anyone else who looked vaguely like a tourist!
"complimentary parking" - If we had returned late to this place, we would have missed a car park as there are insufficient parks for the number of rooms.
"business class amenities" - never saw anything that might resemble this! No respectable business person would stay there.
"The guestrooms are regularly renovated" - the rooms may have been renovated at some stage since 1965 but the furniture is still of that era and is falling to pieces. It was so dusty and dirty, not even a cat would have sat on the lounge or chairs. When I did sit on one chair, it collapsed. All chairs & lounge were absolutely filthy with stains. The shower head sprouted water in all directions and certainly needed "renovation"!
"Kitchenettes - this means a kitchen without any eating, drinking or cooking utensils at all supplied - not even anything suitable to make a cup of coffee in your room! Naturally, as there were no cups, there was no tea or coffee supplied.
" and daily housekeeping" - we stayed 2 nights and there was no housekeeping done and by the smell of the place, it hadn't been vacuumed for months (or maybe years!)
Laundry facilities" - these may have been available but we would not have used them, considering the cleanliness of the room - we couldn't imagine it would be much different at any laundry that may have been available.
"complimentary coffee available around the clock" - didn't see where you could obtain this from? There was no coffee supplied in the room.
When we asked for street directions to this place, it was suggested we phone the motel direct (from Australia??? - no thanks)
It was absolutely disgusting.

“Not even for free.”

Not much for parking, maybe 12 spots for 45 rooms. I was very uncomfortable having to leave my vehicle parked on the street for the night. A group of guys partying outside of their rooms at 3am also made me nervous. The different colored lights outside the rooms added to the creepiness. If I wouldn't have been there with a friend I wouldn't have stayed. I passed on staying a second night. Sometimes free isn't worth it.

The room condition over all wasn't too bad, but you can definitely tell it's an older building. Small fridge and stove, sink with lower cupboard. Table with 2 chairs. No remote for the small tv. Bathtub was an outdated yellow, but clean. Inconvience to walk through the back bedroom for the bathroom. Empty bottles on the roof next door was the view out the back room window. There are much better places to stay in Anch. This is one I put on the bottom.

“It brought me to tears”

We stayed at the Anchor Arms our last night in Alaska. We were looking for something with an airport shuttle and not too expensive. At $49/night, we took it. What a mistake! We were upgraded to something that looked like an apartment for long term tenants. There was a living room, full kitchen (without knobs on the stove, not that we were going to cook), bedroom, and full bath (with a tub/shower that had shower doors like you would have in your home). I cried when we entered. I begged my husband to go somewhere else. I really didn't think I could stay there. Although not the best, he said we could tough it out one night. The blanket on the bed was filthy, we took it off the bed. The bathroom was tolerable but not sparkling clean.
He decided to go next door to the "Polar Bar". Shortly after he left, two girls knocked on our door asking for someone who was not in the room. This made us wonder if that was a set up and they had planned to enter the room if no one had answered the knock.
We checked out early the next morning, took our luggage, and went to breakfast. He told me later, he was afraid to leave our luggage, go to breakfast, and check out upon returning to the room.
We learned our lesson. Now every time I get a troubled look, he tells me I have the "Anchor Arms" look.

“It's Getting Better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2005

I've been staying at the Anchor Arms every summer for the past 8 years. The past few years have seen the property slowly decline in quality and service.
On my last two visits however I was pleasantly surprised and welcomed by new managment, new attitude and a much cleaner and safer hotel. The new owners have started renovations, hired new managment, front desk, security and housekeeping staff and the hotel is starting to get back in to shape. While there are still some things to take care of, I'm happy to see the wheels of progress in motion.
