We stayed at the Anchor Arms our last night in Alaska. We were looking for something with an airport shuttle and not too expensive. At $49/night, we took it. What a mistake! We were upgraded to something that looked like an apartment for long term tenants. There was a living room, full kitchen (without knobs on the stove, not that we were going to cook), bedroom, and full bath (with a tub/shower that had shower doors like you would have in your home). I cried when we entered. I begged my husband to go somewhere else. I really didn't think I could stay there. Although not the best, he said we could tough it out one night. The blanket on the bed was filthy, we took it off the bed. The bathroom was tolerable but not sparkling clean.
He decided to go next door to the "Polar Bar". Shortly after he left, two girls knocked on our door asking for someone who was not in the room. This made us wonder if that was a set up and they had planned to enter the room if no one had answered the knock.
We checked out early the next morning, took our luggage, and went to breakfast. He told me later, he was afraid to leave our luggage, go to breakfast, and check out upon returning to the room.
We learned our lesson. Now every time I get a troubled look, he tells me I have the "Anchor Arms" look.
