“It brought me to tears”

We stayed at the Anchor Arms our last night in Alaska. We were looking for something with an airport shuttle and not too expensive. At $49/night, we took it. What a mistake! We were upgraded to something that looked like an apartment for long term tenants. There was a living room, full kitchen (without knobs on the stove, not that we were going to cook), bedroom, and full bath (with a tub/shower that had shower doors like you would have in your home). I cried when we entered. I begged my husband to go somewhere else. I really didn't think I could stay there. Although not the best, he said we could tough it out one night. The blanket on the bed was filthy, we took it off the bed. The bathroom was tolerable but not sparkling clean.
He decided to go next door to the "Polar Bar". Shortly after he left, two girls knocked on our door asking for someone who was not in the room. This made us wonder if that was a set up and they had planned to enter the room if no one had answered the knock.
We checked out early the next morning, took our luggage, and went to breakfast. He told me later, he was afraid to leave our luggage, go to breakfast, and check out upon returning to the room.
We learned our lesson. Now every time I get a troubled look, he tells me I have the "Anchor Arms" look.

“It's Getting Better”

I've been staying at the Anchor Arms every summer for the past 8 years. The past few years have seen the property slowly decline in quality and service.
On my last two visits however I was pleasantly surprised and welcomed by new managment, new attitude and a much cleaner and safer hotel. The new owners have started renovations, hired new managment, front desk, security and housekeeping staff and the hotel is starting to get back in to shape. While there are still some things to take care of, I'm happy to see the wheels of progress in motion.

“Anchor Atrocity is more like it..”

I ended up staying here Nov 2004 because there were few other cheap options available around midnight. Don't let the "hotel" part of the name deceive you it was in fact a motel and they coined the term "roach motel" with anchor arms in mind. The room was dressed in depressing 1970's decor with thin cheap stained carpet. There were gross hairs on the linen and a stained shower tub. The lighting was dim and depressing. Around 2am I was serenaded by the sounds of a vomiting yelling drunk a few doors down.
The only positive thing to say about the place is the price (I grudgingly paid $49 for the room) and the location which is close to downtown. The staff was also at least somewhat friendly which made up for the abysmal atmosphere. Although from reading other reviews it seems that staff service is usually nonexistant. If you like slumming it in a 3rd world environment then Anchor Arms is a fine choice.

“absolutely horrible”

In their ad they said they have a shuttle to the railroad and airport. Well, they would not pick us up from the railroad and then the next day they would not take us to the airport. They were extremely rude and acted like we had nerve to ask about the shuttle. The rooms were disgusting and the place was full of drunks. The bed was so thin you could feel the springs right though it. We had to wear our street clothes to bed because we were so grossed out. I would not recommend anyone stay there ever.
