“Definitely the place to stop & spend the night...or more!”

If you are looking for a clean, quite place to rest your head-this is it. Staying in downtown Anchorage was awesome, I was close to everything. The people running the show at the Hostel were as friendly and informative as it gets.

My stay was a bit off their season. Which, I guess is why they were in full tilt maintenance mode, literally replacing an entire bathroom with beautiful tile & new fixtures, all without disturbing anyone (there are so many bathrooms, which before staying there I was leery about).

Parking was interesting (you are in downtown) until I found Delaney Park on 9th, which is free, otherwise you'll have to do metered. But, if you're truly backpacking the bus system is awesome (really easy to follow) and it's across the street down 1/2 block to the main terminal...very convenient!

Cooking was really fun there, everyone was accommodating as to usage of stoves, etc.& everyone traded food. Basically if you mentioned something smelled good they would be giving you a little plate to try...very nice people!

I stayed in a private room, which was clean, comfortable & quite. The bunk rooms looked like fun though, maybe next time- cause the price is right!!

I live in CT, so it might be a while before I get back that way...but, would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great value, right in the heart of Ancorage!

yes its a rough title but i dont think they would let me post my true feelings of this hell hole from one of the outer rings of hell. but i will try to keep my 48 hour experience as nice as possible. i was going to a job out to a job in the remote bush of Alaska so im use to ruffing it but this place is unreal.. first of all most of all places were full and this place had a couple beds free. so i show up in the evening to check in and just looking at the dreary gray building from the out side made me think i was checking in to a jail. now i find the office door and i step in and no one is at the desk so i wait..15 minutes later a older slender man that looks bald with a ball cap on stumbles out of a back room area and said hi and asked if i would like to check in and i said yeas and i just called about a hour ago for a bed and it was to be held for me.... well now this guy looks lost and starts to stare and the slips posted on the wall and tells me "no we dont have any rooms.." ok now im mad but i just want a bed so this guy says hold on let me find """"" (what ever his name was) so now i wait another 10 minutes and the other guy shows up and checked me in - in just a minute and off to my room.. my room was up stairs and when i walk into the door i was greeted with the smell of damp gym socks. yuck.. onward to my room.. now the doors dont lock and my room (dorm) the door wont even latch right so when you walk by it it pops open. the room is dark and has some old fitted sheet covering the window as a makeshift curtain.. how cheap... now my room smells different from the hallway but its not a improvement! its a mix of body odor and wet dog and the other people decided to use my bed as storage since it was vacant for a few hours.. oh well -they moved their stuff in just a few seconds. thin pillow cases, old sheet, and the bed spread looked to be very warn with age.. i head out to get some food and go to the kitchen to eat. sticky floors and there seem to be only spoons available when i wanted a fork.. next day i wanted to cook some steak - and there are plenty of plates but no bowls and 1 good skillet that seems to be in constant use so i guess i need to take a number and wait my turn... now i ready to eat! oh yeah i forgot theirs not a fork and 3 huge knifes and a dozen spoons and no paper towels... oh yea i forgot to tell you to forget about sleep here with all the loud talking at all hours and people going in and out of doors until 3am ..... im tied of typing and reliving this place in my mind - here is the short version of it!!! dirty and or smelly bathrooms ( wear flops at all times or shoes) dark dreary hallways, one stove in the kitchen is just to fill the gap between cabinets, one fridge freezes everything one fridge is cool, and the other must be the good one because its crammed full of food! ... dont go to this place even to visit make your buddy meet you somewhere else! and my last morning i woke up with some bite on my face and neck - i have no idea what bit me but after reading reviews im guessing it was bed bugs but i dont know for sure.

“Kind of Creepy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2011

I have stayed at other hostels before and I have to say this one has been the worst! My friend and I stayed in a private room that was nothing special. A bed and a set of lockers plus a garbage can along with a few bedbugs. Yuck! The unisex bathrooms were constantly out of toilet paper, probably because everyone liked them the best as you could use them privately and lock the door behind you. There was no hand soap of any kind in the hostel. The tall, bald guy with glasses at the front desk was no help at all. He was more interested in staring at the computer than answering a few simple questions. The wifi only worked half the time we were there. Strange people, I'm guessing because the summer hadn't really started and the winter people were still there. Overall, I didn't get a good vibe from this place.

“Dirty and filthy place to stay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

I stayed here for one night and cancelled my 2 other nights that i was suppose to stay here. This place is super dirty and shady. The bathroom was a mess. I have never stayed in such a bad hostel all my life. I asked for a clean sheet and all they could offer was super yellowish filthy sheets. It was a nightmare experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I had bug bites in the morning. The comforter looked like being used by some homeless people.

you have a curfew. you can't lock your room. ten am you gotta be out of your room for a few hours (cleaning)
those are the cons.
everything else is everything you've ever dreamed a youth hostel could be. niice nice staff and general feel to the place. coin laundry. tv in common area. hooked up kitchen. grocery store 4 blocks away. this is the place to stay when you see Anchorage.
