We stayed here for one night in June at the conclusion of a three-week journey through BC and AK. Both the City of Anchorage and the Historic Anchorage Hotel were unexpected pleasures.
We had no expectations for Anchorage and assumed it would be simply a way-station prior to our return flight. Instead, we spent a thoroughly enjoyable 24 hours in town and wished that we had budgeted another day. Anchorage is a lively and interesting city with plenty to do and see, and this hotel is right in the center of everything. The location couldn't be more convenient, especially for the Segway tours which commence across the street. Give them a try -- it's a blast to glide around the city on them.
The hotel is indeed "historic" and some might find it "dated." To us, the quirky charms were irresistible. It really feels like you are in a movie from the 1940's. We had a Junior Suite on the top floor -- it's very roomy with a nice view of the neighborhood. No air-conditioning, but a huge standing fan was provided and it was more than enough to keep us cool on a warm night (the fan also added to the retro feeling). It's a lively neighborhood, but that's part of the charm (I will concede that we were there on a weeknight, so we didn't experience Saturday night revelry). We kept the windows open and had no difficulties. I'm a native New Yorker, though, and I love the sounds of the city.
The Historic Anchorage Hotel provides a unique atmosphere (and free breakfast!) at an unbeatable price. We will definitely stay again if we return to Anchorage.
