The rooms are nice like any Embassy Suites would provide. The breakfast was wonderful and in fact my eggs were somehow the most tasty I've ever had at an Embassy Suites, and I've stayed at a few of them. The staff was great too. My problem with this property is that instead of the "atrium in the middle" layout like most Embassy Suites, this seemed to have a mile long hall. Of course I was at the end of the 2nd floor (that's all the higher this hotel goes). What frustrated me was I could get out at my end of the hotel's "back 40" hallway, but I couldn't get back in to my room without going to the lobby and doubling back by going down the "green mile" to my room. That is to say, rather than being able to walk 60 feet to my room, I had to go what seemed to be a quarter mile to get to the room. So it didn't matter if you wanted to park in a more convenient spot in the parking lot, if your room is on the second floor, you can't get to your room without going to the lobby. If you stay on the first floor you can get back in to the far end of the hotel hall, but 2nd floor dwellers can't just go up a flight of stairs because there isn't one there. No matter what, you have to go to the lobby at one end of the hotel to get to the rooms on the 2nd floor.
I also wanted to use the hot tub. It should have been easy to slip down the stairs at my "back 40" end of the hotel, but that didn't work either. I ended up at the hotel's laundry facility, had to go back upstairs and then all the way to the elevator and go through the lobby in my robe to get to and from the hot tub. I hated that. I would have been happy had their stairs at "my" end of the building gone to the first floor from which you could go all the way to the lobby. The stairs only went to a door to the outside you couldn't get back in once outside. The only door you could get in at that end of the hotel only accessed the first floor with no stairs to get right up to the 2nd floor. You had to go in a big circle to get to your room. Sorry to belabor this, but the lack of access in and out easily from the 2nd floor was a total aggravation.
And the nightly manager's reception? If you like peanuts and chips, then you'll be fine. I thought, given this is the Embassy Suites the reception would be a tiny bit upscale, but it was a joke. After having been to Homewood Suites just down the road a piece, another Hilton property, and having salad and stew with drinks and more REAL FOOD, I figured the Embassy Suites would be at least as nice as that. I took one look at the meager array and turned around and went out to dinner elsewhere. Peanuts and chips for crying out loud. I guess they were expecting Larry the Cable Guy.
This hotel is ridiculously laid out, and literally, you can't get from one part to another. I hated that. And while the room was fine, the other thing that really gets me is that many Hilton properties expect you to pay $10 or more a day for internet. Come on, that is a total ripoff. Other hotels that are much more inexpensive provide free internet. What makes Hilton/Embassy Suites think that's ok? Well, I suppose if it's a business cost, then it gets passed on. My company wouldn't reimburse me for it so I paid for it myself. Never again.
Suffice it to say I won't be staying at this Embassy Suites again, and I travel to Anchorage on business several times a year. The logistics of simply getting in and out or to the hot tub (which was nice until a pack of screaming kids came to play in the pool) plus the audacious effrontery of charging for internet and the cheapo chips and peanuts at the "manager's reception" drag what could be a 5 rating to a 2 rating. Call it an aggravation deduction.
First floor close to the lobby or every day will be a marathon.
