As my wife and I are planning our annual trip out of town, our first and only choice is Chambered Nautilus. We discovered this inn about 11 years ago on a whim when we wanted to see what Seattle had to offer (we live near Portland). Our first trip to Chambered Nautilus, and meeting inn-keeper Joyce was so memorable that we made it an annual event.
Though we have explored just about all of the explorable regions of Seattle, it's not just the city that brings us back. We delight in the simple and charming (yeah, I said "charming") accommodations the inn has to offer. We have stayed, literally, in every room inside the inn (excluding the suites). Our favorite room is the one we first stayed in, the Garden Chamber. The house is always warm and inviting, a safe haven for travelers ranging from 100 to 1000 to thousands of miles away. We never fail to meet up with fellow travelers and share stories over breakfast. One year, we ran into the same gal at the same time that we had met the year before. Chambered Nautilus inspires but doesn't require, community.
We can't say enough good things about the Inn, but it's the inn-keeper, Joyce, that brings the heart into the place. Joyce is the most accommodating, personable, warm innkeeper we have met in our travels, and we've been to many inns in our lifetime. She always has time to check in with us, make us feel welcome and comfortable. One year we traveled up on a significant wedding anniversary, and she remembered - we had some special treats in our room that year. Joyce remembers our stories, even though we only see her once per year. She remembers that me and lactose don't get along very well and there are options at breakfast. Joyce IS hospitality.
If this has been your experience at Chambered Nautilus, then you're in good company. I've seen a few negative reviews and I can only offer this - give them another chance. Sometimes reality doesn't meet our expectations, but give it another go and see the Inn from different eyes.
We are looking forward to our trip this year. It's only a month away. Hope to see you there!
