“pleasant place, dog-friendly, many stairs up from street”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We enjoyed our stay in the dog-friendly annex, but did find the long climb up stone stairs from street something of a struggle with luggage at our ages. Some parking challenges as is limited. A large park is nearby, good for walking with dog. Cookies are available. We do not care for breakfast being served at fixed times only (maybe we are not good B&B guests) rather than an open buffet with more flexible hours. Probably we will not go back due to stairs and the restricted breakfast schedule. Not sure we ever saw innkeeper unless she was the person in the kitchen.

Room Tip: did not see rooms in main house as were in dog-friendly cottage annex.

“Gets better every year!”

As my wife and I are planning our annual trip out of town, our first and only choice is Chambered Nautilus. We discovered this inn about 11 years ago on a whim when we wanted to see what Seattle had to offer (we live near Portland). Our first trip to Chambered Nautilus, and meeting inn-keeper Joyce was so memorable that we made it an annual event.

Though we have explored just about all of the explorable regions of Seattle, it's not just the city that brings us back. We delight in the simple and charming (yeah, I said "charming") accommodations the inn has to offer. We have stayed, literally, in every room inside the inn (excluding the suites). Our favorite room is the one we first stayed in, the Garden Chamber. The house is always warm and inviting, a safe haven for travelers ranging from 100 to 1000 to thousands of miles away. We never fail to meet up with fellow travelers and share stories over breakfast. One year, we ran into the same gal at the same time that we had met the year before. Chambered Nautilus inspires but doesn't require, community.

We can't say enough good things about the Inn, but it's the inn-keeper, Joyce, that brings the heart into the place. Joyce is the most accommodating, personable, warm innkeeper we have met in our travels, and we've been to many inns in our lifetime. She always has time to check in with us, make us feel welcome and comfortable. One year we traveled up on a significant wedding anniversary, and she remembered - we had some special treats in our room that year. Joyce remembers our stories, even though we only see her once per year. She remembers that me and lactose don't get along very well and there are options at breakfast. Joyce IS hospitality.

If this has been your experience at Chambered Nautilus, then you're in good company. I've seen a few negative reviews and I can only offer this - give them another chance. Sometimes reality doesn't meet our expectations, but give it another go and see the Inn from different eyes.

We are looking forward to our trip this year. It's only a month away. Hope to see you there!

Room Tip: If you don't mind a bathroom OUTSIDE your room, choose the Garden Chamber - it's the least e...

“You Can Go Back Again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

It was our 2nd stay and just as delightful as our 1st. This time we were in a smaller room, Rose Room, which was lovely but had less closet space than the Crow's Nest which wasn't available. I peeked inside almost all of the rooms and can say that there are no duds. Breakfast was eye-catching, healthful and varied. Every day we had a fruit salad, a dish of delicious granola, and then the main course: stuffed French toast, ginger pancakes, eggs with veggies or ham, vegetable quiche. Always available in the living room were hot beverages and a big jar of chocolate and chocolate chip cookies, and a bowl of fresh fruit.

The staff was very helpful and very engaging and the crowd around the breakfast table came from England, Germany, Scotland, etc.

This bnb is up about 25 steps from street level and so you have to be willing to shlep your bags up and down the stairs. Not a problem for us.

I love this location - in the University District, near a lovely park (Ravenna Park) and walking distance from U-Village, a very pretty outdoor shopping mall, and University avenue where the students go to shop and eat. We had a car this time and so were able to follow up on Tripadvisor hints. We loved Discovery Park, about 15 minutes away - OH, bring your GPS! essential in this neighborhood of one-way streets. Also recommend Experience Music Project, a terrific museum downtown. Very enjoyable stay and it didn't really rain much either!

“Beautiful home, excellent value, great hosts and dog friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

This was our first stay at the Chambered Nautilus because this is the first time we travelled to Seattle with our dog. Joyce is a wonderful host and she has great staff. We enjoyed meeting other guests at the large table in the morning. Breakfast was excellently prepared. The room in the dog friendly suite was very comfortable. My only regret was that we didn't help ourselves to the cookies as much as we should have. We will definitely stay at the Chambered Nautilus again when we drive to Seattle.

“Excellent accomodation, Great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

We just spent another wonderful two days at this B&B. (I think it was our 5th stay) Joyce and her staff have every detail of a relaxing stay covered. The rooms are tastefully decorated, clean and comfortable, the breakfasts always a winner, and who can resist the smell of chocolate chip cookies just out of the oven! This place would be at the top of our list if it were anywhere in Seattle. The added bonus is that it is situated in a great area, 5 minutes from UW, easy transit to downtown, good shopping nearby, the Burke Gillman trail for walking or cycling and many great restaurants in the U district. It's one of our favourite getaways.
