We were looking for a place to stay in Skagway overnight as we planned to catch the ferry the following day. As the Chilkoot Trail Outpost had so many positive comments on Travel Advisor we decided to give it a try. Thanks to everyone for your comments! We arrived a little late but the owners were just great. When we asked about supper a barbecue was suggested with us doing the cooking. We were all for it. They had everything prepared and even had some wine added in. While we went down to take a look around Dyea and the flats they cooked up some baked potatoes for us. We returned, had the barbecue and finished off the wine with the camp fire keeping us warm. A really great memorable way to finish the day.
As the salmon had started to run, the following morning we headed back to the flats prior to breakfast. Luck would have it in that we came across a grizzly going after the salmon. Quite the sight to see before breakfast. The breakfast, by the way, was great.
We had actually booked the cabin about four months prior to going and could only get two half cabins for the four of us. Consequently, my advice would be to book well ahead. The cabins were clean but basic. They certainly had all we needed for the overnight stay.
The time we spent at the Chilkoot Trail Outpost was certainly one of the hightlights of our trip. If I'm ever up that way again, I would certainly stay there.
