“Just like I imagined the French countryside to be...”

The drive leading up to Le Tronchet was beautiful, but when we got to little hamlet and saw the old Abby , we felt as though we were in a dream. This is just as I had imagined the French countryside to be. The Hostellerie was delightful, with thick stone walls, old dark wooden beams, and beautiful details throughout. The dining room was a newer addition, with lots of light streaming in , and overlooked the most romantic little river. Our rooms were plain, but perfectly adequate, and opened out onto a little terrace. We enjoyed our stay here immensely, and were disappointed that it was booked full when we tried to return this year.

“nice for short stay”

The hotel is okay for 1-2 nights.
The good sides: location, price, nice food, the charm of old French abbey

The bad sides:
It was very warm in the room even though we had the window fully open all the time.
Our night sleep was disturbed by some kind of noise coming from downstairs, it was probably an old refridgerator or the cooling system.
The cleaning lady first put the new clean towels on the floor in front of the door of each room before going inside and changing them. In my opinion the towel can''t be considered clean anymore if it was lying on the corridor floor....

“Charming, pastoral spot- quitessential French countryside!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2007

While some areas (e.g. the tennis court) need a little attention, my overall experience here was dreamlike. Situated in a quaint, storybook french village (yes, adjacent to an abbey), this beautiful little stone hotel retains the charm of the farm it was converted from. Beatuiful scenery and pastoral grounds, welcoming staff, excellent food at the restaurant, etc.

Understand what you're getting here. The rooms are basic, as they are in most older European establishments, so you're not going to find any sleek modern touches. It's even fair to say that you may find some corridors complete with slightly cobwebbed corners, but the rooms, common areas, and grounds are clean and well kept. My room was comfortable, with a large writing desk looking out a huge window over a courtyard and swimming pool. The bathtub was long and deep with a handheld shower and piping hot water. The route to my room included ducking through a low door and winding up a narrow wooden stair, but the charm of the old place was so overwhelming that I didn't want to leave.

Though I passed through with a group of American high school students (I am a teacher), it's a place I'd love to revisit on my own, enjoying it for longer than my too-brief one-night stay. Of my nine days in Paris and the surrounding coutryside, this place was a definite highlight.

  • Liked — Historic charm, beautiful grounds, friendly staff.
  • Disliked — Love it all.

“Enjoyed Our Stay”

We were traveling with a group of American teenagers through Brittany and Normandy. We spent one night at the Hostellerie Abbatiale Le Tronchet and found it to be a charming and enjoyable stay. The kids enjoyed the pool, despite the coolness. The food was excellent in the beautiful dining room. Le Tronchet is a small village of about 800 or so, with a beautiful Abbaye to visit. This is a really small village which my wife and I circumnavigated in about an hour -- very charming and small. I'd go back

“Terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2006

I staid 1 night from April 14th to April 15th 2006 at the Hostellerie Abbatiale near Saint Malo in Brittany, France. It was an awful stay, and I can only recommend travellers NOT TO GO THERE. You'd be better off choosing a "chambre d'hôtes" - French for B&B - rather than going there.
To start with, I asked for a double bed when I booked the room, and we ended up with twin beds. When I complained, I got the answer that the hotel was fully booked... by Italian tourists who apparently had lots of issues too, according to discussions I heard. The room smelt quite bad, due to humidity I presume, as there were several obvious signs of humidity everywhere. Moreover, the heater was far too small to heat the room, so we ended up trying to sleep under 2 sets of blankets each. The cold was also an issue in the main restaurant, where we could not sit for the whole diner as it was too far too cold. In the room was the bathroom. Pretty large, but with no heater whatsoever, so it was freezing cold in the morning when we woke up. Here was almost no furniture in the bathroom, so we had to take the table of the room to put our toilet bag on. The shower had no tub, so when we tried to shower, the entire floor was wet, which included the floor of the toilets as the toilet seat was in the bathroom. I wrote “tried to shower”, as we could never actually take a shower: the hot water was far insufficient to enable a normal human being to wash. If taking a cold shower might be nice in Hawaii, it is not even an option in April in Britanny when it’s about 10° Celcius (50°F) in the bathroom.
When I complained again, at check out, I did not even get a “we’re sorry” from the management.
