Our family had an Alaska adventure last summer. We rented a car and drove all over, Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali & Seward. After a fair amount of research we chose to stay in Seward & at the Salmon Bake Lodge. Smaller, newer family owned lodge apparently built to accompany the "Salmon Bake" restaurant-AMAZING! Rooms were well appointed and cozy. There's free continental breakfast & pretty decent coffee in the am, owner and staff are super helpful re: local attractions/excursions. Despite our 6 hours in Denali, we actually saw more bears at the hotel. There is a dumpster between the restaurant and the hotel and one of the mornings, another guest lightly tapped on our door at 6am ish. A mama bear and her 2 cubs were having a heyday out back. Nearly all the guests crowded onto the fire escape in their pj's to watch, ooooh and aahhh in safety.
Other notes:
You are approximately 3-5 miles from the "exit glacier"-one of the few glaciers in the world you can almost drive up to. Allow yourself 2 hours minimum for a great, relatively easy hike.
Mitch Seavey's Iditerod experience- pretty cool, especially if you are a dog lover!
Chinook's for delicious seafood-walk it off around the marina afterwards
Kenai fjords cruise-4 hour lunch cruise. Great whale watching & up super close to glaciers-way cooler than you might imagine, other wildlife, food is much better than you'd imagine, full bar too. Bring hat/gloves- you'll want to stand on the deck for awhile & it's cold.
Salmon bake lodge is off the cruise ship beat and path and locals eat in the restaurant- can't get better advertising than that.
