“Sounds better than it is”

On the premises of the Exit Glacier Lodge a number of cabins are stashed. Not really in the nature, but on the parking lot of the busy Salmon Bake restaurant . Accomodation is sparse.

“Rustic feel but very comfortable”

We searched for something that would feel like we were out in the woods but that was also affordable and accessible without a rent-a-car. Our 12 year old son surfaced this on the internet and we were glad he did. With rental cars going at $85+ per day (we didn't need to drive around), we decided to pay the very reasonable taxi service at $10 each way to town and save the difference vs. other more expensive options. The price was great for a cabin quad (around $120; they added a cot at no extra cost). Bathroom was huge, clean and very comfortable...not what you think of in terms of a "cabin". The cabins are owned by the same folks that run the Salmon Bake restaurant next door (a must) plus their new sister property, the Glacier Exit Lodge which we stayed at also on our last night due to full bookings (all contiguous). When you stay in the cabins you can opt to have a continental breakfast at the Lodge for $7 a head. The owners are very hospitable and offered lots of help coordinating excursions and such (Sarah). They had maid service with a nice Mexican family, and since we live in Mexico it was a nice plus to connect with them too. We'd go back in a minute!

Only one suggestion on transport, don't use "Mike's Taxi" service. The guy totally ripped us off on our last day when I failed to ask beforehand for a price with a short stop in between. Another prominent local later told me that he was not in her favor either...

“Best hotel of our trip, friendly, clean, amazing food, BEAR sightings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

Our family had an Alaska adventure last summer. We rented a car and drove all over, Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali & Seward. After a fair amount of research we chose to stay in Seward & at the Salmon Bake Lodge. Smaller, newer family owned lodge apparently built to accompany the "Salmon Bake" restaurant-AMAZING! Rooms were well appointed and cozy. There's free continental breakfast & pretty decent coffee in the am, owner and staff are super helpful re: local attractions/excursions. Despite our 6 hours in Denali, we actually saw more bears at the hotel. There is a dumpster between the restaurant and the hotel and one of the mornings, another guest lightly tapped on our door at 6am ish. A mama bear and her 2 cubs were having a heyday out back. Nearly all the guests crowded onto the fire escape in their pj's to watch, ooooh and aahhh in safety.

Other notes:
You are approximately 3-5 miles from the "exit glacier"-one of the few glaciers in the world you can almost drive up to. Allow yourself 2 hours minimum for a great, relatively easy hike.
Mitch Seavey's Iditerod experience- pretty cool, especially if you are a dog lover!
Chinook's for delicious seafood-walk it off around the marina afterwards
Kenai fjords cruise-4 hour lunch cruise. Great whale watching & up super close to glaciers-way cooler than you might imagine, other wildlife, food is much better than you'd imagine, full bar too. Bring hat/gloves- you'll want to stand on the deck for awhile & it's cold.

Salmon bake lodge is off the cruise ship beat and path and locals eat in the restaurant- can't get better advertising than that.

“high rise city centre luxury with small town family business service...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2009

probably the best hotel/motel we stayed in out of a whole three weeks. the rooms in the main building are suprisingly luxurious with space and a lovely shower and caters for breakfast (better places in town, worth going to 'the smoke shack') run by a lovely lady and next door to her sons restaurant which was absolutely great- niec family place with a great menu and really friendly staff. ate there two nights in a row and had different meals which were both lovely, especially the seafood pasta! However, it is the locl place to go so phone ahead if you have a big party. rooms were lovely and were like a city centre highrise luxury hotel , but small town friendly service...
