“Bed Bugs as well...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

I just returned from a disappointing trip to Hawaii and we also experienced bed bugs (second floor B suite). I had bites all over me and once we figured out that the bites were bed bugs (bugs were confirmed in between the mattress and boxspring) I decided to leave that day (2 days early) There was no sympathy from the staff, would not discount any of the days that I stayed and would not credit me for the 2 days when I left early. I would not recommend this place.

“Bed Bugs?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

I spent one night at Patey's Place Hostel/ Hale Koa Wood Inn and had an unfortunate experience with bed bugs which ended up being incredibly painful and itchy. In order to be fair, I don't believe that the whole hostel is infested because my friend and the other guy in our dorm did not get them. However, if you're highly attractive to mosquitoes, like I am, I would be weary because bed bugs seem to be attracted to the same people. I woke up with about 70 bites covering my body where my skin was exposed. Two days later I was still going crazy from the itching and finally went to urgent care where they prescribed me Prednizone and topical treatments. In addition to the discomfort and fact that it ruined my last day in Hawaii, the response from the manger was very disappointing. I called just to inform them and hopefully protect future customers, but the manager's response was unsympathetic and unprofessional. Her initial response was to complain that I had interrupted her on her day off. Then she told me that it wasn't that big a deal and it's just like mosquito bites which she gets all the time. Believe me, so do I and 70 bites is a whole other level of insane itching! She also told me as a traveler I should expect to get sick and that she thinks that other people just aren't as "tough" as she is. I have been backpacker for over 10 years, been to >50 hostels and lived in 4 South American and Caribbean countries. Her attitude was really surprising plus the fact that she initially refused to give me a refund. The clincher was when she told me that she didn't think I needed to go to urgent care. In her defense, she called me back later to genuinely apologize for her behavior, which I appreciated and said she had thoroughly checked the bed twice and not found anything. The doctor did tell me bed bugs pick certain people and unfortunately I am one of them. So if you're a magnet for Mosquitoes and/or Bed Bugs, do not sleep in the bottom bunk furthest from the door in the Male/Female dorm!

“The hostile Hostle”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

The accommodations were adequate and the "volunteer" staff was friendly but the manager Zero was just a rude and unpleasent. he yelled and cursed at the father of the other person sharing our unit for not observing "quite" time even though we couldn't hear him in our room right across from them. He was also very rude. I would never stay here again. for $14 more we had a great place to stay at the Kona Islander Inn.

“Not Bad for a Short Stay”

My friend and I only spent one night at Patey's Place, and it was good for us. Free parking, free wifi, good info, fairly friendly staff. I really enjoyed the hammock which was perfect for doing a little reading. We stayed in a dorm room which was fine but nothing special. I would probably not stay longer than a night or two again, but I would return.

“Bed bugs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

The people there were great and I had a great stay....UNTIL I found bed bugs in my luggage upon leaving. When I called to confront the manager about this she was very unhelpful and denied any responsibility for the bed bugs and any chance of them being there, despite one employee telling me they had had experiences with them recently.
So all in all, if I had left bed bug free I would have been happy, but once I had a problem (one that cost me almost $1000 in replacing items I had to throw away) it was very clear that the person in charge was only amicable to paying customers who had no problems, but was unwilling to help my situation and contact the owner on my behalf.

I would never want anyone to go through this experience.
