“quiet, great location”

We enjoyed the beautiful scenic and historical location of this hotel. It was quiet, just what we were looking for. The room was dated, but clean and comfortable. We paid extra for a deluxe oceanview and this proved to be a wise decision. It is next to a fantastic snorkel location. Other reviewers raved about the breakfast buffet. I am sorry to report that this did not live up to the billing and during our stay, a notice was given that there would no longer be many of the items leaving it similar to other 'breakfast included' hotels. You could have toast, scrambled eggs, pancakes (french toast eliminated), mixed fruit (sliced papaya with lime eliminated), (granola eliminated), anyway you get the picture. We were also surprised that parking was $10-$15 per night and the 'free' inroom internet access was only if your device had an ethernet connection, which my ipad and phone did not have. I don't like surprises. Ending a positive note, on Wednesdays (or at least while we were there) a Farmers' market set up on the grounds of the hotel. It had lots of local items and live music as well.

Great hotel with everything you need! We stayed in room 711 which had a sweeping view of the ocean and pool. The daily free buffet breakfast was a feast for a king. Everyday they had fresh fruits, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, toast, juice, coffee, etc. The staff was kind and helpful in all departments.
Snorkling just a few steps from hotel and pool was empty most of the time, so we had it all to ourselves.
Room was neat, clean, and functional.
Location was perfect. Far enough away from shops and traffic, but close enough to drive there in a few minutes. Wednesdays the cruise ship arrives and you can see it from your balcony. We loved drinking our coffee on the balcony and are ready to go back! Choose this hotel and you won't be sorry.

Room Tip: Any room is good, but we were on the top floor, room 711.

“Still a great property (and value)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2012 NEW

We just returned from our 4th stay at the Outrigger Keauhou Resort and was very happy to see that the property has been well maintained over the years. The grounds are beautiful and service very good, however the best features are the hotel hanging over the ocean and overall value. We again booked an oceanfront room which is well worth the few extra dollars for the amazing view. I don't know anywhere else where you can sit on the balcony and look straight down to see turtles and fish. The included breakfast buffet exceeded our expectations with a wide variety of choices and good quality. We only had to wait for a table once and you could see the manager and staff quickly trying to turn tables and get guests seated. The hotel also has a very nice fitness center and self service laundry facilities. The beach adjacent to the property is great for snorkeling and we enjoyed Magic Sands Beach (about 1 mile north of the hotel) for it's sandy shoreline and playing in the waves.

I believe that the hotel is trying to atrtact more value oriented guests with their great rates and included breakfast buffet. With this I fear that they won't be able to maintain the quality and overall Aloha experience. On Memorial Day weekend, they hosted many, many families for a local baseball tournament. The public areas, particularly the small pool area, were very loud and overrun by kids (infant to early teens). Outrigger, please make sure you continue to maintain this great property!

Room Tip: Choose an oceanfront room for an amazing view of the ocean and sealife!

“Fantastic Vacation on the Big Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2012 NEW

We stayed 10 nights (5/12 through 5/21) in oceanfront room 301. We don't ask for much (in a room), but we expect to have a hot shower, a clean room, a comfortable bed and adequate AC. We were not disappointed. The wrap-around balcony was especially nice. We saw oodles of turtles, eels and fish in the tidal pools as well as beautiful sunsets over the ocean.

With its lush vegetation and interesting ancient ruins, the grounds were immaculate. The pool was clean and the water warm. The breakfast buffet was more than adequate and offered enough variety to meet our needs. I especially fell in love with the coconut syrup which I put on my pancakes and french toast everyday. The beach (Kahalu'u) next to the hotel offered nice snorkeling especially for beginners. There were lots of fish in shallow water.

We believe the hotel is a great value and we have nothing but good to say about it. Would we stay there again? Yes, but if the VOG continues to be a problem (as it was for us most afternoons), we would probably opt to stay in the Kohala area.

P.S. When time permits, I will try to write about some of our trip highlights in the forum.

Room Tip: Get an oceanfront room - it's well worth the price!

“Excellent value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2012

There are several great things about this hotel:
1) Great snorkeling within very close walking distance
2) Large rooms
3) Excellent value price-wise
4) Close enough to Kona to enjoy restaurants, etc in town (unlike the Kohala area resorts which are a 30 mile drive away from town)
5) Rooms are very clean and have a refrigerator

The only negative is that it does have an "old" feel to it, but it really did not matter to us.

One thing we are very glad we did was upgrade to the "oceanFRONT" room. We have usually felt it was not worth the extra expense of upgrading to ocean "view" rooms at other hotels, but the ocean front room at this hotel had us looking directly down into the ocean from our balcony. You could see turtles, eels, and multicolored fish all swimming in the crystal clear water underneath your balcony. Really a spectacular sight! Also, great view of the sunset while sitting on the balcony. We felt the upgrade price was very reasonable and definitely worth the extra money.

Housekeeping was very friendly and helpful. A couple of the gentlemen at the front desk were also very nice and friendly, speaking to us whenever we left or returned.

No, this is not the Four Seasons, but you are not paying for the Four Seasons either. We thought it was a great place for a relaxing vacation at a reasonable price. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: The Ocean "Front" rooms have a great view directly down into the cryustal clear ocean wate...
