“Lovely grounds, great location, dirty run-down unit”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My husband and I don't mind budget, but dirty is another matter. The view of the bay across Alii Drive was lovely and the Inn was within walking distance of the Farmer's Market and great shops and resturants, plus the tropical gardens and pool on the grounds were really pretty. They should get their gardeners to do unit maintenance and cleaning; with their commitment to excellence it would be a great improvement.

In our unit, #349,the kitchen was dark, the sink didn't drain well, the kitchen doors wouldn't stay closed, the countertop particle-board underlay was disintegrating and filthy, but impossible to clean; a real public health hazard. The bathroom shower was rusty, and the living room rug was really dirty - filthy actually. And it's not as though these problems are unknown: we actually had a salesgirl down the street ask us why we were staying in "that dirty place!"

We still have 2 nights next week we've paid for, and we're planning to insist on seeing the unit before agreeing to take it. Wish us luck! BTW, we booked this on Expedia for $99/night, and outside they advertise one night for $69 and 2 for $59: it was NOT worth $99/night!

“Utter Misrepresentation”

We are budget minded travelers and can easily accept minimal lodging standards but this "Hotel" is abysmal. This complex is not a hotel, just a collection of dirty, neglected. sparsely furnished and poorly stocked condos. There is no ice anywhere nor hair dryers or toiletries or drinking glasses etc. The Zombie attitude of the staff will not get you another room, even if you complain.
You can so so much better just by going either direction of this pitiful accommodation.

“A Dump!!”

Don't bother staying there.  The room floor was filthy, the shower stall dirty, they don't give soap in the room, one roll of toilet paper for a week and that's it, the pillows were stained, the AC was an old window unit that sounds like a truck running, the kitchenette is pathetic, you get knives, forks, spoons and that's it, no other utensils, the freezer in the refrigerator was completely frozen.  The maid service is a joke, they take all of your towels in the morning to wash and don't bring them back until just before dinner.  There are people living there as condo owners and they do run power tools at at any time, the hotel maintenance staff run trimmers and lawn equipment at 8am.  This was the worse place I've ever stayed.

“Watch out for Unit 153!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We were recommended to the Kona Islander by a family friend who stays for a month at a time. Unfortunately, we did not get to experience the nice unit they stay in.
Upon arrival our unit wasn't ready - so we went out for early happy hour. When we returned a couple hours later and handed the keys and entered the room it STILL wasn't ready! No beds made, dirty floors etc. This unit was a huge disappointment - 2 queen beds stuffed into a studio, no chairs to sit on, really dirty, old furniture from a timeshare long ago. The only redeeming feature was its location - a ground floor, corner unit with ocean view.
Following our first night on very poor beds, we discovered the dried vomit on the patio railing. On the second day we noticed the blood stains and other gross stains on the bedspread. This unit was nasty. There is also no insulation between units so you hear everything. If you are fishing and getting up early we recommend an upstairs unit to avoid noise issues We moved out after the 3rd night and were lucky to get a room at the Hale Kona Kai for our remaining 4 nights.
The Kona Islander only provides one roll of tp, 4 towels and one hotel-size bar of soap for the entire stay.
Upon leaving we notified the management about the issues with our room - no apologies were given or attempts to credit our stay were offered.
Overall, the location is great, the common areas clean and maintained. Just be very aware of what room you are renting.

“Nice place to stay, but check the room first !!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

I was afraid to go in there with so many bad reviews here, but when we get there, it was nice. First, you must understand that it's not an hotel, it's a place where people rent their condo. That said, each room is different, but with minimal thing in common : a kitchenet, air conditionner, tv, ... all in different state.
We get there 2 times in one week (the other nights for visiting east cost of the island) and the first one was really clean and have free wireless (it's a secret ;) but the second one was really unclean. The front desk ask us if we wanna change for another room, but we finally decide to stay there because it was only for 2 days and we got ocean view.
Other than that, the garden is beautiful with many flowers and tree. Free to use big bbq, a pool and a spa in the middle of it. Nice place to stay, but check the room first !!
And a bad thing : the parking is always full.
