All units at Hale Kona Kai will have a fantastic ocean view. It's just that some units have a more fantastic view than others. So you can't complain about the views from these units. I stayed for 5 nights in a top-floor unit (#411) which was well equipped and comfortable. I'll mention more on the unit later in this review. Each unit has an assigned parking stall with the unit number painted on it. However, the numbers aren't arranged in any particular order. #203 might be next to #410 which might be next to #308. Also, the property has two parking lots, so if you don't find your assigned stall in one lot, chances are it will be in the other lot.
The leasing office closes at 3:15 PM but arrangements were made for my late arrival and everything went as planned. There is a key safe in front of each unit. I was given the combination to access the key. Inside, the air conditioning was on as was the ceiling fan in the living room. This was much appreciated as it was hot and humid outside. On the counter was a parking pass to place on the car's dashboard as well as a second key to the unit. The key will also grant you access to the trash room (one on each floor) as well as to the barbecue grill that is on the property. There are also laundry rooms (coin-op machines) on each floor. Almost anything you need will be within walking distance whether it's a beach, tiki bars, good restaurants, shopping or sunsets.
While I did not use the barbecue grill, I did make use of the pool. The pool area was recently renovated as was the pool. The pool is decently sized and went as deep as 7 feet. It was nice to take a refreshing dip after long days out and about.
Because each unit is indvidually owned, it will also have its unique furnishings and amenities, and the appliances may not necessarily be brand new. Unit #411 had modern furnishings -- flat screen televisions, oven/range, refrigerator. However I was very surprised at the amount of rust that was on the inside of the microwave oven. I've never seen such a bad case. The microwave oven worked just fine, though. It also had nice granite countertops in the kitchen and bath area.
I've posted views of the bedroom and views looking out the living room toward the Royal Kona Resort and also views from the balcony. The unit truly has all the comforts of home -- cordless phones (local calls are free), ceiling fans in each room and balcony, a functioning and quiet central air conditioner (which I kept running all day to keep the humidity at bay and turned off at bedtime), spacious open kitchen, etc. There are tons of towels in a closet as well as linens for the bed. The teal blue striped beach towel seems to be a favorite based on its wear and fading. I certainly like it! There are also tons of drawers -- they are in the dresser and on both sides of the bed frame. The bedroom closet was well-stocked with beach chairs, etc. There was a hall closet that had an assortment of snorkels and fins. I chose to rent a set of snorkels and fins from Snorkel Bob's, which was just down the street. You should explore what is available in the unit before going out to buy an item. The unit just might already have it!
Hale Kona Kai was a good home base for me. It was about 2-1/2 hours drive to Volcano National Park (a day trip), and not more than an hour to the snorkeling sites around Kona, Captain Cook, or Honaunau. Kona is usually sunny in the mornings but will get overcast around 2 or 3 in the afternoon due to the formation of clouds from the heat (afternoon convection). If you want sunny beach time, go to the beaches on the Kohala coast, just north of Kona. The Kohala coast remains sunny all day.
