“Great location but the hotel is looking its age”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

The hotel has an unbeatable location right on the rocks overlooking Kona Bay but I first stayed in this hotel in 1999 and to honest the room I had this time did not look as if it had be updated since then, ignoring the flat-screen TV and WiFi access point :). It wasn't dirty and everything worked: it was just looking tired and worn. But if I am back in Kona (I suspect I will be) this will still be my first choice.

“A grand old lady who needs a facelift!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Back when this hotel was built, it was extremely impressive. Great location, architecture, and furnishings. Well, it appears that things need to be up-dated. It is a good value and really adequate. Our only complaint was the somewhat noisy AC, but the weather allowed us to cool the room when we were out and it stayed cool for sleeping. Our room, 360, was in the tower that faced the lagoon. It was a pretty location. I liked the sliding louvered doors/shutters but did not like that the lanais were not securely separated so we had to keep the outside doors locked. The bar and pool were pretty and being right on the ocean edge was wonderful. Located near the bustling tourist strip it was convenient to fun shopping and restaurants. The luau was something that everyone should experience. I think you could enjoy the show from the pool area and the food was nothing that I would want to do again. But we had to go to a luau at least once. All in all, this was a good place to stay. I would have liked to have had one more day in Kauai and one less on the Big Island!

Room Tip: Get a partial or full ocean view.

“Great place to stay if you talk to the right desk staff.”

We had requested a king bed when we reserved our room for 10 nights at the Royal Kona. We were given two double beds, making my 6 foot husband very uncomfortable. We asked every day for a room with a bigger bed and no one even looked into it for us they just said "we are full". Finally on the 4th day we talked to Liz at the front desk, she had our room the next day. We have stayed there 3 different times and never had a problem until this time, I vowed never to stay again. Have to say we did not meet one helpful staff member until Liz, she always had a smile and wanted to make our stay comfortable.

Room Tip: 213 terrible, 209 much better.

“Check your room before you unpack”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Do not let them put you into the Bay Tower - it's away from the main hotel and very noisy. We couldn't sleep the first night because of the extremely loud air-conditioning units on the roof. We complained and they offered us another room in the same tower 2 floors down. Not good enough; then they offered to upgrade us for an extra $25 a night. After calling for the manager they gave us a room in the main building where we could sleep & it did have very nice views. Beautiful bar outlook but awful food & slow service, Good location.

Room Tip: Don't go to the Bay Tower- you won't sleep and will have a headache from the noise.

“Adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

The resort is in a great location and the outside is very impressive. Close to a lot of shopping and eateries. Once inside the room is a different story. Baths need work and A/C was very loud. We did enjoy the bar and view. I guess that for the price it was okay. Internet should be included though.

Room Tip: Choose Ocean view rooms. We had Mountain View wish we had upgraded.
