This hotel situated in the heart of St Johann in Tirol was typical of the Austrian style hotels so dont expect ultra modern, it is austrian. Our room was large and overlooked beautiful hillside, it was so comfortable with lounge area and large bathroom and shower, clean and most of all the Manager was fully aware of dietary needs. I am a coeliac and require a strict gluten free diet, no wheat, no breadcrumbs, no thickening with flour. In Austria most foods are flour but the Manager here catered for me and provided gluten free bread for breakfast, even though I had taken my own. Food was grilled soup was clear, everything was checked out for me and I remained well. On a previous visit to another hotel in Austria they had given me soup with flour and I was extremely ill so I was amazed that the Manager said "I am a Hotelier I should know all the different diets for clients" wow, well so often vegetarians are catered for but very few places really understand the danger of flour in food for coeliacs, so well done.

“Good value hotel, has its flaws though”

We stayed here for a weeks skiing in Feb 09, we booked this through Crystal SKI and chose it purely on price, appeared great value for a family room with half board.
From the outside, the hotel looks fabulous, its really old and and looks so pretty.

The room we were given was at the front of the hotel and seemed decent enough, really quite big, really two rooms connected together. The front of the hotel is on the pedestrianised area, so no traffic (nice and quiet we thought - how wrong were we!), at night we were woken by loud, often drunken shouts and general revelry from the party goers returning to their hotels, it was so noisy I thought we'd left a window open, however they were all closed, its just that they were so old and warped and did not shut out any sound. The curtains did not fit at all well either and let in loads of light from the street lighting.

In the morning I complained about the noise, we were offered another room that would be free in 2 days time and were told it was just noisy as it was Saturday night. Sure enough the next night was either a lot quieter or we were just a lot more tired due to the lack of sleep the night before.

We had tons of snow, all week which was great for the skiing and made the village look really nice, however the downside was that we were woken by the beep-beep-beep and thundering diesel engine of the snowplough as it cleared the pedestrian zone in front of the hotel, even the flashing lights on the thing were lighting up our ceiling due to the ill fitting curtains.

The food in the hotel was very good, even our fussy kids had no complaints and the service was efficient and polite.

One thing that we couldnt work out was why the hotel foyer area was so dark and dingy, its quite large and the space is really wasted. There was a strong stink of cigarette smoke in the foyer, shame it is tolerated in Austria unlike in the UK now.

Having small children meant we were in bed by 8pm, on more than one occasion we were woken by an almighty din that seemed to be coming from next door. I got dressed and went to investigate only to find that the adjacent room was the designated kids play room !. I wend down to reception and complained and asked them to make sure the play room was locked at 8pm which they apologised for and agreed to do. I did have to remined them to do this though on a couple of nights.

All in all the hotel was fine for the price we paid but could easily of been a lot better, would advise you do not get a room at the front of the hotel due to the noise.

“Great snowboarding.. not so great hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2009

Myself and my husband have just returned from a week snowboarding in St Johann - its a lovely little town and we will definitely go back for more snow fun! The Hotel Post was OK, but I wouldn't stay here again. It was pretty dingy inside (we had trouble locking the door as it was so dark in the hall), and was very old-fashioned. This in itself was not a problem.

Unfortunately our room looked over the town square, and on the first night we were kept awake until after 4 am with drunk folk outside - evidently they don't know how to walk home without shouting about it to the world. Then the bin lorry arrived about 6 am... When we enquired about moving rooms, they didn't seem at all apologetic or concerned that we were kept awake all night, and said it was probably a one-off... It did happen again another couple of nights, but by then we couldn't face moving rooms (plus we had a bath which was good after a hard day!!).

Aside from this, the breakfast was OK as well, although not much in the way of options.. some fruit yoghurts or croissants would have been nice. I pretty much lived on cheese rolls or rolls with chocolate spread each day. The evening meals were not that nice (we are both vegetarian, so no choice of dishes) so we only ate at the hotel for 2 nights of our stay - one night was a big lump of fried cheese on sauerkraut, the other night it was 3 big cheese and spinach balls with more cheese on top... thankfully the self service salad was good! The desserts were also quite nice. Austria is not big on vegetarianism though, so this was pretty much as I expected.

St Johann was actually pretty cheap to eat and drink out anyway, and there was a lovely Italian restaurant at the bottom of the slopes (tip - pre-book a table as it was very popular!). Max pub at the bottom of the slope was a fantastic place to sit an enjoy a few beers or gluhweins after a hard day.

The snowboarding school was excellent (although sometimes a painful experience!!) and our teacher, Michael, was great too :) The runs are much longer than I expected - much longer than the ones in Scotland anyway. It was a great place to learn or improve your skiing or snowboarding, with plenty of wide blue runs. I will hopefully be back next year, (armed with crash pants this time).. but I will be booking independently and will not be staying at the hotel post.

“Average hotel but good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2008

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Post, a holiday arranged with Crystal. The Post is situated conveniently in the centre of the small town and also within a ten minute walk from the train station where trains to Salzburg, Innsbruck and other local stations can be caught.

We were allocated room 10 at the rear of the hotel. The room was larger than the standard Austrian hotel room, with a King bed, a three seater sofa and matching chair, a desk and chair and a further chair at a desk that a small TV stood. There were three English channels; BBC News, BBC Prime and CNN. The bathroom had a bidet, toilet, large sink and a bath, but no shower. There was a shower spray that could be used to rinse ones hair as it had to be hand held. When bath time came, the switch that changed the water flow from the spray to the bath did not work, so we went to reception to explain. We were told that we could have another room to bath in (room 8) and if we liked that room, we could change. If not, a plumber would repair the offending switch the next day and we could stay in room 10. We checked room 8 and as it was only half the size of our original room, decided to use it for bathing only. The next day the switch was repaired and we had no further problems. The bed was in a wooden frame and every movement, no matter how small, produced a large creaking noise. The floor under the bed had not been cleaned for some time, neither had both window sills.

Meals were taken in a separate dining room to the restaurant as we were on a half board basis and the choice was rather limited. Each night we had the choice of one soup, the salad buffet, three main courses, one of which was vegetarian, followed by one dessert. Ice cream could be provided as an alternative. The food was delicious but not too hot and in some cases rather salty. Breakfast was the standard buffet style with a good choice of cereals, bread, rolls, cheeses, ham, fruit etc. Eggs were also available, cooked to order.

There is a separate restaurant for non package guests and a bar. The hotel also has a small lounge. Both the bar and lounge get rather smoky on occasions. I would say that the hotel is on a par with others we have stayed at in Austria but not outstanding. It’s main plus points for us were the location and the short walk to the rail station. Would we stay here again? I do not think so.

“Great hotel, bring your ear plugs!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2008

Having Booked late for a skiing holiday my partner and I accepted that we may not fully like what we ended up with
as far as accomodation was concerned. Imagine then how
pleased we were to find our selves in this quaint little hotel in the centre of st Johann in Tirol Austria.

We were greated on arrival by a very sweet lady in local dress
who could not have been more welcolming. Our room was basic
but more than adequate with en suite shower (tip - let the water run hot before you shower it takes a while to come through at the right temp). We headed straight for the guest restaurant because of the lateness of our arrival, and once again we were pleased to find a charming couple running a well decorated dining area, where oldy worldy mingled with modern fixtures in a warm light environment. On a lighter note the local radio station provides some entertaining background Austrian music!

The food was local and very well cooked with clear soups, (to die for), pork escallopes, one veg dish + some fish, beef and chicken options, all very well presented with a help -yourself salad. It should be note that pork was on the menu everynight so if you don't like there is little other choice - however the variety of sauces and cooking methods made sure it was always an excellent choice.

The only downside was the noise from the street at varying times during the night from revellers on the way home. But on talking to other people staying in other hotels this was a town problem rather than specific to the Hotel Post - if possible ask for a room that does not face onto the main street. The town was however on the whole quiet and most definately famly friendly.

We enjoyed our stay at th Hotel post and would return in the near future. It would make a lovely base to explore this area at any time of year not just during the skiing season.
