We stayed in the Berg Residenz last New Year, and apart from the Crystal Rep, we had an excellent holiday. The location between Obergurgl and Hochgurgl, with a ski bus stop right outside the front door, allowed easy transfer to the slopes (minutes in either direction). We were also very impressed with the quality of the accommodation and the food. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, and all things considered, we decided that for any future ski holidays to Obergurgl we should choose to stay here again.
Having left things a little late to book, we found ourselves staying in a Junior Suite in the Hotel Muhle and have returned home even more impressed than last year. Whilst we would happily stay in the Berg Residenz again, the hotel offers a greater selection of food (and afternoon tea) in more formal surroundings, although families with young children also appeared to be well catered for. The newly enhanced pool and spa facilities allow the more conservative traveller to enjoy a top class sauna and steam room without being naked - a development by the owners in direct response to previous guests' comments.
Most of the guests in either accommodation are German, Austrian or Russian, who all book directly with the hotel as we did this year, flying into Munich and hiring a car for the 3-4hr drive (although flying into Innsbruck would allow a transfer of less than 90mins).
Some may prefer to be in the village itself, but the hotel offers an inclusive shuttle service for night skiing and through the day the ski bus service runs every 10mins.
We have stayed in two different Obergurgl hotels in the summer, but the Muhle has better food, facilities and a warmer welcome. The Muhle will continue to be our choice for winter holidays.
P.S. No Austrian hotels offer tap water, so please do not take offence to paying for bottled water. Prices for the fine wines offered by the glass or bottle seemed reasonable for a hotel of this standard.
