We have been going to the Bergwelt for more years than I can count and have also stayed in two other 5 star Obergurgl properties over a twenty year period. The Bergwelt works fantastically well on many levels. Firstly location - if you are an adequate skier you can be on skis within a 5 minute flat walk of the hotel. Coming back at the end of the day is about the same although you do need to get up some speed en route! Alternatively there is a hotel ski bus which hovers around the ski school meeting place that will get you back. Using the garages which are on the lowest level of the hotel it is possible to be in the town within a few minutes walk. There's very little in the town and it seems that most people spend their evenings in their hotel. Probably the most noteworthy aspect of a stay at the Bergwelt is the food. Breakfast gets better every year with a buffet containing every imaginable cold fayre and a chef on hand to make eggs and omlettes. After skiing the Elk bar entices you to linger with complimentary buffets: cake, sausage, meatloaf, strudel - something different each day. Dinner is an event although not in the sense that might be stuffy or formal. The several course extravangza has beahtifully prepared appetisers, soups and main courses with a large and varied saled buffet. Exquisite desserts and cheese and fruit if you have room! The wine list is extensive and caters for everyone's wallet. Not surprisingly there is a large selection of Austrian wine giving an opportunity to try some excellent suggestions not widely available back in the UK. The restaurant staff are highly competent but very approachable. The only small criticism is that dinner has to be selected at breakfast - not ideal, but more than understandable.
Reception is efficient and as old timers welcoming. Porterage is good. The rooms are a mixture of traditional and modern styles depending on the part of the hotel you're in. In my time I've stayed in both but since we've been travelling with our daughter, we've always had the same suite in the newest part of the hotel. All rooms are well decorated and kept spotlessly clean by the couteous cleaning team. No shortage of hot water day and night which can't be said for all my Obergurgl five star experiences!
Kids club is great and the food offering for them is the same as the adults but with the addition of their own child friendly buffet area which is available from about an hour before the main meal if you have young children or children that don't want to eat with parents.
The indoor and outdoor pool areas work well. We've never used any of the Spa facilities but it looks an attractive facility.
The family Falkner who own the hotel are very visible and run things very tightly. The Head Chef Klaus has been around forever as has Anita on reception and a number of other members of staff so I guess that means they run a happy ship. It is a very family friendly hotel too catering for babies through teenagers.
I book for the following year the day we leave. This may be considered by many to be boring but we find that we hit the ground running with the skiing, we are never disappointed with the hospitality of the Bergwelt team and we can look forward for a whole year to our return.
I can't recommend this hotel more highly.
