“Consistently excellent for over a decade”

All Obergurgl 4* are very good but the Bergwelt still remains the standout choice; I think this was our seventh or eight stay. What keeps us coming back is truly superb food and outstanding service. The cooked to order breakfast omelettes are perfect; the five course dinners frequently at Michelin star standard. As you might expect, it is spotlessly clean, well maintained with incremental improvements over the years. Since our last visit, there is a new boot room which has eased the congestion at the beginning and end of day. The proprietors are always very much in evidence and his hosted wine-tasting is well-worth the €15 to sample some excellent (and very expensive...) Austrian reds. Like all Obergurgl hotels, the Bergwelt is not cheap but it is value for money. Remember also that this hotel only open six months of the year so the significant costs of running a property of this quality need to covered in only 6 months of occupancy.

Room Tip: Newer rooms suit people with contemporary, minimalist tastes. Older ones are more traditional Austri...

“Special ski hotel- 6th visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

This was our 6th visit to the bergelt hotel. This time with grandparents and our two sons-3 yrs and 8 months respectively.

The hotel is really special, beautiful surroundings, great food and against tough competition, I am still mild we came back here.

The last time we came was 3 years ago, so what's changed?
Food awesome, but slightly less choice at breakfast buffet than before. Still very good though.
They used to do an asian night with sushi etc which they no longer do and they now charge for the wine tasting evening and fondue nights

They have created a cigar lounge- v nice decor and the ski room has been extended. I hear next year they are extending the wellness area which is already very nice.

The rooms were extremely warm/ hot. Sweating without a duvet etc!
Service was usually very good although they can be a bit serious sometimes!
The kids club room is very nice, the clientele very friendly etc.

Will def return again although would try the alpina perhaps if the prices increased too much

“Quality”

Very well run hotel, first class staff, superb food especially breakfast although the dining room in the evening was uncomfortably warm. From the online description we had the impression that the hotel was ski in/out and although it was close to the slopes this was not the case.

We have been going to the Bergwelt for more years than I can count and have also stayed in two other 5 star Obergurgl properties over a twenty year period. The Bergwelt works fantastically well on many levels. Firstly location - if you are an adequate skier you can be on skis within a 5 minute flat walk of the hotel. Coming back at the end of the day is about the same although you do need to get up some speed en route! Alternatively there is a hotel ski bus which hovers around the ski school meeting place that will get you back. Using the garages which are on the lowest level of the hotel it is possible to be in the town within a few minutes walk. There's very little in the town and it seems that most people spend their evenings in their hotel. Probably the most noteworthy aspect of a stay at the Bergwelt is the food. Breakfast gets better every year with a buffet containing every imaginable cold fayre and a chef on hand to make eggs and omlettes. After skiing the Elk bar entices you to linger with complimentary buffets: cake, sausage, meatloaf, strudel - something different each day. Dinner is an event although not in the sense that might be stuffy or formal. The several course extravangza has beahtifully prepared appetisers, soups and main courses with a large and varied saled buffet. Exquisite desserts and cheese and fruit if you have room! The wine list is extensive and caters for everyone's wallet. Not surprisingly there is a large selection of Austrian wine giving an opportunity to try some excellent suggestions not widely available back in the UK. The restaurant staff are highly competent but very approachable. The only small criticism is that dinner has to be selected at breakfast - not ideal, but more than understandable.
Reception is efficient and as old timers welcoming. Porterage is good. The rooms are a mixture of traditional and modern styles depending on the part of the hotel you're in. In my time I've stayed in both but since we've been travelling with our daughter, we've always had the same suite in the newest part of the hotel. All rooms are well decorated and kept spotlessly clean by the couteous cleaning team. No shortage of hot water day and night which can't be said for all my Obergurgl five star experiences!
Kids club is great and the food offering for them is the same as the adults but with the addition of their own child friendly buffet area which is available from about an hour before the main meal if you have young children or children that don't want to eat with parents.
The indoor and outdoor pool areas work well. We've never used any of the Spa facilities but it looks an attractive facility.
The family Falkner who own the hotel are very visible and run things very tightly. The Head Chef Klaus has been around forever as has Anita on reception and a number of other members of staff so I guess that means they run a happy ship. It is a very family friendly hotel too catering for babies through teenagers.
I book for the following year the day we leave. This may be considered by many to be boring but we find that we hit the ground running with the skiing, we are never disappointed with the hospitality of the Bergwelt team and we can look forward for a whole year to our return.
I can't recommend this hotel more highly.
