Room:
Our family stayed at the Hotel Schieferle for one week in March 2008 for a ski holiday. We had booked a family suite and discovered our room was in the older of the two buildings. My daughter loved her room within the suite; it had wooden beams and paneling, and a stained glassed door. She had a private deck. Our part of the suite however, was not renovated, it had older carpet and furnishings, and the floor squeaked underneath. We shared our deck with the room next door. The water for the bath (no option for standup shower) was lukewarm at best. After dinner, there was someone smoking nearby and it permeated the room and the smell remained until morning. When we went to sleep, I could hear the person in the room next to ours snoring! The following morning we requested a different room due to the smell of smoke, snoring, and lukewarm water. Our request was met with indifference instead of deference, but we were moved to the newer building. What an improvement! The décor and the construction of the room were of higher quality. There was a shower stall with hot water, the furniture was newer, and the view was even better. Best of all it didn’t smell like smoke and it was quiet at night….no sounds from the other rooms. Tip: Elizabeth (the daughter) is the most fluent with English should you have any involved questions or concerns.
Meals:
Meals were served at schedule times. I believe breakfast was from 7:00-10:00 am and dinner was at 7:00 pm. If you didn’t get there early you risked not having certain food items replenished at the salad bar/breakfast bar. There were a few times when the salad bar items or fruits weren’t restocked. The main meals were good, the salad bar unremarkable, and the desserts uninspiring. Of the six meals we ate there only once was a dessert presented that went beyond ice cream, pudding, or fruit. The service however, was fabulous.
Other:
There is a pool table, small swimming pool, sauna, and steam room. There is a family room for playing board games, but this area also allows smoking. Schieferle Hotel no longer has wireless internet as indicated on their website. There is a wireless café about a five minute walk from the hotel located in another hotel. It costs about 1.5 Euros for 15 minutes. The hotel website states there is a washer for use. We chose to go into Innsbruck and do our laundry all at once at the laundromat. A brochure for the laundromat (Bubble Point) is found at the visitor’s center. Soap is provided free of charge.
Skiing:
We rented a car from the airport so we did not use the skibus. The mountains are easy to find and the parking is plentiful. Most of the mountains run shuttle buses to/from the parking lot and lodge. The slopes are anywhere from a 3-40 minute drive with most mountains being within a 30 minute drive. Our favorites were Stubai Glacier and Schlick 2000. Mutteralm was enjoyable also and very close to the hotel. The best deal was purchasing the Innsbruck Pass which allows you to ski any of the 8 or so mountains. This worked out well because if one mountain was fogged in you could drive to a mountain at a lower elevation and ski without wasting money on an unused ticket. We rented our skis from the Sports 2000 ski rental shop in Mutters. They had quality equipment and excellent service.
Mutters:
Quaint, small town. Visitor's Center in town, also a pharmacy, bakery, grocery store, and bank. We noticed the tram into Innsbruck was a popular option. Innsbruck is 10 minutes by car and I think the train was about the same.
