“nice hotel but over priced”

Good views from a few rooms but out of the village with a steep climb. Very noisy as walls between bedrooms are paper thin and the bar is in the centre of the hotel. The hotel is run by the Gerns an Austrian family and the best rooms and tables in the restaurant appear to be reserved for Austrian visitors.Staff are friendly and service is good. There is no lift for the first floor from reception so you are left to carry your bags up the stairs. The pool is out doors and heated but was dirty around the edge so we did not allow the kids to use it.You need to check on the room type before booking as some superior rooms are no larger than standard rooms but include a very small balcony which cannot be sat out on and has a view of the car park or trees. This hotel is expensive compared to other similar hotels in Saalbach so check around carfully before booking.

We have been coming to Sonnleiten for almost 10 years now, together with 3 or even more other families, earlier with children who are now teenagers. Excellent location with adjacent slopes, nice rooms, nice sauna and pools, especially the outdoor one. Nice to swim outside having snow falling on your head. Dinners are just so nice, good mix between buffets or menu, theme dinners. We will come back, hopefully many more times.

“Ski In / Ski Out Family run Austrian Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2010

We booked the hotel for our New Year break for a week's skiing - we had a double room and our 3 children aged 19, 13 and 10 shared a junior suite. The fact that we could almost ski in and out was great and the ski shuttle to take you to and from the ski shop was very convenient as is the service for you to simply leave your hired skis for collection by the ski shop on departure. The view from our room were great. The hotel is clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful - especially the barman and the maitre d'. The menu is extensive and food good. The spa was lovely and I had a great massage. The chiildren enjoyed the pool after a hard days skiing. The downside is that our bedroom stunk of smoke because guests next door insisted on smoking in their room despite being told not to. Considering the expesnive rate that the hotel charges we were disappointed that we did not have a double bed but rather two singles pushed together with single duvets which left us a little cold and uncomfortable. The owner made his New Year address at a nice little party laid on by them - but did not say a word in English despite the fact that the majority of people were from England, New Zealand, USA and Sweden and did not understand what he said - even a simple 'Happy New Year' would have been appreciated. Never the less, the positive outweighs the negative and we would recommend the hotel as it is typically Austrian with a good atmosphere.

“Amazing views”

We spent a week here for a ski-ing holiday. Ski conditions were perfect which meant we could practically ski to and from the hotel. The hotel is lovely - very Austrian in that it combines great comfort with practicality. The views are picture perfect of the mountains and ski slopes. Our room looked out over the slopes. We booked a family room for the two of us - in fact that was all that we could book through our travel agent - and it was very spacious. The hotel is up a fairly steep slope but if you're walking without ski gear and are mobile, it won't pose you any problems. We enjoyed it. If you take one of the ski routes where you end up back in town rather than at the hotel, it's a ten euro taxi fare. The ski hire place recommended by the hotel will drop off and collect your skis, so in my opinion the hill is a small price to pay for the views. The food is excellent and the staff throughout the hotel could not have been more helpful and professional - the sort of place where if you had a complaint, they would sort it out. It is delightfully clean. At night the whole hotel is dotted with candles and there is a lovely atmosphere.

“Nice hotel, a little loud”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2007

My husband and I and a friend of ours and her son (age 16) stayed at this hotel from 30.12.06 to 08.01.06 when we were skiing in Saalbach. The hotel is either a 5 minute walk down / up a very steep incline or about 8 minutes expensive taxi ride away from the town centre. Its decoration is pleasant enough, although when considered in relation to the very expensive cost of the rooms I must admit I was disappointed: the bathroom was tiny and almost every day I banged my elbow off the one shelf that was in it. Decor was dated in the room. Also, the soundproofing was dreadful, as in there was none. We stayed on the first floor and I was not thrilled to hear the music from the bar thudding through the floorboards every night, not to mention clearly following the conversations in the neighbouring room. Without my earplugs I would have been livid as I need my sleep when on holidays. On a positive note, the staff in the bar and restaurant were very pleasant and helpful, although I did find that we really had to make an effort to attract any attention in order to get served, but to be fair I think this was because they were under-staffed, and not inattentive. The food in the evenings was first class. However, given the very expensive cost of the holiday, it really got on my nerves that the salad bar was always completely empty by 19.45 when we arrived (dinner was from 1900-2100) and it was never replenished so each evening we either scraped the last of the salads up, or went without. Breakfast was excellent if you were up early enough. Two mornings we arrived for breakfast at 0830 and all the hot food was gone. As we got up to leave at about 0900 a waiter arrived with some fresh scrambled eggs. One further point: there were lots and lots and lots of children in this hotel and because they were on their holidays they tended (understandably) to run riot quite a bit. This was fine for a while but by the end of the week I was wishing we had stayed somewhere with less kids as quiet evenings by the lovely fireplace were impossible and the general atmosphere was fairly chaotic. Great for young families then. Generally speaking the hotel is fine although I don't consider it to be good value for money and because I have no children I would not stay there again.
