Just came back from skiing in Mayrhofen, we booked our hotel through Crystal, the brochure stated "Finest" a 4 star hotel which we were both looking forward to.
At drop off we were initially impressed with the "look" of the hotel and the inside was ornately decorated and indicative of the money we paid. Then we were taken to our room which took a while to get to, traipsing along long corridors and a walk way which felt like we were "leaving" the main hotel area behind.
Eventually we got to our room which suggested we had gone to the other side of the road away from the Main Hotel. The room was very disappointing, small, very basic, small bathroom, cow shed opposite, (which wasn't too much of a problem) however, this added to the list of disappointments!! Curtains which didn't close properly, we had to squeeze passed each other to get anywhere....basically what you would expect if you paid for a 2 star chalet. The bed was comfy though!
But we paid a 4 star price. So we are pretty "miffed" with Crystal as this was not stated in the brochure. apparently the annex is deemed 3 star. Which we had no idea about until we got there.
Friends of ours who came with us were in another hotel, their rooms were hugely better than ours, yet they paid less! So not impressed.
However, the food and service was good, especially the breakfasts. The main hotel is lovely and there is plenty to do, there is a good spa and swimming pool, a bowling alley, cinema and movie bar. which gives you an idea of its size! The hotel caters for big groups of people. So not very cozy or intimate....great for families and large parties!
The Hotel is placed at the bottom of the main hill to the gondola but handy as it's at the quieter end of town, unless you are directly above the bar.
So the upshot:
Check your room before you travel, make sure that you get in THE MAIN HOTEL not the annex across the road.
A skiing holiday is of course about the skiing and socialising, and of course, you are not in your hotel room all day, you are out and about doing stuff, however, having paid for a 4 star hotel, after a tiring day on the slopes, you expect to come back to a room which reflects a 4 star experience, not a 2 star room in a 3 star annex!
