We stayed here for one week in April 2012 and booked as a last minute half board ski deal with Crystal Ski.
The Hotel Sonnblick is really very nice. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. The rooms, dining area, bar, sauna/whirlpool and outside pool areas are all excellent (only slight negative is that the whirlpool wasn't very warm when we were there!). We had a standard room with a balcony, the room was quite small but it was nicely decorated and it was very clean. There was surprisingly a desktop computer with internet access in the room.
The buffet breakfast was substantial and very good - lots of everything! Cold meats, breads, cheese, jams, honey, fruit, bacon, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, cakes, cereals, yoghurts, fruit juice. There was a complimentary afternoon snack of soup/bread/pasta dish/cakes provided every day (I think from 3pm ish) and this was nice to come back to after skiing. After that the evening meal & salad buffet were also superb and the wine list was extensive (wine charged extra).
The major disappointment of our stay at this hotel was that it was spoiled by a large corporate group (Nokia phones) from Eastern Europe. They took over the hotel and were very unfriendly and rude, pushing their way past people to get to the bar/buffet area, generally taking over all space and then partying very noisily throughout the night, we could see them from our room and they were smoking and drinking in their rooms and throwing their rubbish down towards the pool area - they were a disgrace to their company - I've never witnessed behaviour like this at any hotel I have ever stayed at previosuly. Thankfully we weren't in the rooms beside them but other guests who were beside them were very upset and angry. We complained (as did others) to the staff the next morning about the noise however they didn't do anything about it and the same happened again the next night. I think this is very disappointing for a hotel which advertises as a family hotel - for the sake of other guests if the Hotel Sonnblick are going to take bookings from large corporate groups I feel they should take on the responsibility of making sure they behave properly.
In April it was only the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier ski area which was open, the ski bus stopped directly outside the Hotel Sonnblick and the bus took about 15mins to get to the bottom cable car, then another 10-15mins to get to the ski area via a couple of cable cars.........although very scenic this journey got a bit tiresome by the end of the week. For this reason we'd probably not choose Kaprun for skiing again (maybe it's not so bad when the Maiskogel ski area is open as that is closer?) - after this trip we decided we prefer ski in/ski out!
In summary we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Sonnblick and would recommend it to others............as long as you don't mind taking the risk of it being spoiled by a large corporate group! Although unlikely,if we were to come back to Kaprun to ski again, we would probably take the chance with Sonnblick again, as other than the problem discussed it is a gem of a hotel.
