I cannot recommend this Steigenberger highly enough, it was simply excellent. I booked it largely on the strength of the reviews on this website, as I had been looking for a mountain getaway for my wife, son and I following a few days visiting family in Vienna. It ticked every box, and we were very happy indeed with our choice.
We drove to Kaprun from Vienna, and the 4.5 hour drive was well worth it. We arrived late afternoon on a Sunday, and were checked into a deluxe room on the third floor, (321) which was, for two adults and a toddler, perfect. Large, clean and comfortable, with a great balcony overlooking the village centre of Kaprun and the mountains in the distance. My 18 month old son was delighted with his cot bed, which unlike almost any other hotel we have stayed in with him, was a proper wooden cot as opposed to the travel cots we've been given almost everywhere else. As such, he slept soundly throughout our four night stay.
We awoke on Monday morning to a blizzard, in October. Very early for snow in the valleys, but very welcome. 21 centimeters fell throughout the day, and this gave us a great opportunity to explore the village of Kaprun in the snow, and also to try out the superb indoor swimming pool at the Steigenberger which we all enjoyed very much.
Due to the snow, we didn't eat out of the hotel as we would normally do quite so much, so we ate in the hotel bar and restaurant for three of our four nights, and the food, wine and lovely draft beer was excellent. There is even a 'kinder menu' which my son enjoyed very much, and which the staff were happy to serve in the room to us for an early supper for him. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who were collectively wonderful. This extended to small touches such as offering to wash baby cups for us, and also, when we said that we wanted to eat in the bar, setting up one of the tables with a cloth, everything in fact, so we had the full restaurant experience sitting in comfy chairs in the bar area. One particular stand-out person was Sven, the barman, who was great fun, really friendly and very service minded, but to single him out alone would be unfair to his colleagues who were all first class.
Breakfasts were plentiful, high quality and served if you wished until 1100. I was also highly impressed with the fact that the quality and range of food was extensive, despite the hotel being very quiet (only 30 persons or so) throughout our stay. Standards did not slip one inch, and for that the Steigenberger deserves great credit.
Kaprun requires a hire car to get the best of the area, and as such we went off to Salzburg on one day (approx 01:20 by car) and up the Kitzsteinhorn mountain via cable cars on another day. So plenty to see and do, and for a relaxing late Autumn break, Kaprun and the Steigenberger are very highly recommended!
We have stayed in Steigenberger hotels in Austria before (in Krems and Vienna) and they have always been very good. This one is the most family friendly of the ones we have tried so far, and in terms of providing comfortable accommodation and great service would be hard to better.
My only criticisms (albeit they are very small, but hey, this is meant to be a balanced review!) is that the bedroom furniture could do with a refurbishment or an update (flaky varnish on wardrobes etc) and the swimming pool could have been a bit warmer - but these are only very minor issues which did nothing to spoil what was an excellent trip and a very happy family holiday. Well done Steigenberger!
