“Brilliant hotel that we will return to”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

We booked two adjoining rooms which were ideal for our family. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The indoor and outdoor swimming pools were excellent for the childen. The restaurant was superb with excellent breakfasts and dinners. Our only grouses were the price of wine and the finnish sauna being out of service.

Room Tip: Ask for adjoining rooms if you need them

“Exceptional hotel, wonderful staff & incredible food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 March 2011

We stayed in two adjoining rooms with four children 12 years, 10years x 2 and 8 years for one weeks skiing at the beginning of March. The children all wanted to stay together and there was space in their room to do this. Both rooms were well furnished, spacious, clean and had large showers and a separate loo. We asked for two more pillows which appeared immediately. The temperature was much too hot for us but you can adjust your radiator to your desired temperature.

You do get a little noise from the party goers walking around town but I think that is par for the course in a ski resort at the height of the season.

The hotel welcomes children and is set up to allow them to enjoy their stay. The swimming pool and jacuzzi are clean, warm and friendly. Eugene the manager welcomed them and was happy to let them play and splash around.

At dinner there is a children's buffet which has the most incredible selection of food. They don't have to sit and order and then wait, which is a little hard for the younger ones after a days skiing. They can help themselves straight away. Every night the food was an exceptionally high standard and there was something that all four could enjoy. They all love ice cream and when we asked if they could have some instead of the puddings on offer we were immediately offered a range of flavours. Every night after this our waiter Herr Muller asked them if they would like ice cream again.

The children were also allowed to order from the set menu - a four course delight. I don't really know where to start with the food. I have stayed in many hotels around the world and a good few five star hotels. Neither of us eat red meat and we were a little worried that we might not have much choice. We were completely taken aback by the choice and quality of meals. I love fish which I ate every night. It was always cooked to perfection using tasty and innovative flavours. The wine is a little pricey but very good and Herr Muller was brilliant at guiding us around the Austrian wines - which were delicious. I have tried to track my two favourites down here in England but not surprisingly they don't leave Austria. Enjoy while you can!

Breakfast - more of the same. An outstandingly fresh range of superb quality food. We all loved it.

One of the chair lifts is a 4 minute walk away - easily managed by all four children in boots and with skis. The skiing is very good although we had incredible weather and it was a bit slushy at the bottom at the end of the day. We didn't venture over to Zell am See but did not get bored with what was on offer. The glacier is a little bit busier and the trip down the mountain and onto ski buses at the end of the day is a bit of a bun fight.

One huge benefit for us was the InterSport ski shop in the hotel. We hired all our equipment on Saturday afternoon and put it straight in the ski locker right next to the ski shop. Our passes were organised by reception on Sunday morning. We didn't have to walk around town, queue or wait for anything.

We really enjoyed lunches up the mountain which are much more affordable than France. We went to the same restaurant every day, enjoyed good food, quick service and sunshine.

All in all a superb experience. The General Manager, Marie-Luise Zott knew our names within 24 hours and more than lived up to her aim of delivering a hotel 'with heart'. We would gladly return and recommend to everyone.

“Superb Service, Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

I cannot recommend this Steigenberger highly enough, it was simply excellent. I booked it largely on the strength of the reviews on this website, as I had been looking for a mountain getaway for my wife, son and I following a few days visiting family in Vienna. It ticked every box, and we were very happy indeed with our choice.

We drove to Kaprun from Vienna, and the 4.5 hour drive was well worth it. We arrived late afternoon on a Sunday, and were checked into a deluxe room on the third floor, (321) which was, for two adults and a toddler, perfect. Large, clean and comfortable, with a great balcony overlooking the village centre of Kaprun and the mountains in the distance. My 18 month old son was delighted with his cot bed, which unlike almost any other hotel we have stayed in with him, was a proper wooden cot as opposed to the travel cots we've been given almost everywhere else. As such, he slept soundly throughout our four night stay.

We awoke on Monday morning to a blizzard, in October. Very early for snow in the valleys, but very welcome. 21 centimeters fell throughout the day, and this gave us a great opportunity to explore the village of Kaprun in the snow, and also to try out the superb indoor swimming pool at the Steigenberger which we all enjoyed very much.

Due to the snow, we didn't eat out of the hotel as we would normally do quite so much, so we ate in the hotel bar and restaurant for three of our four nights, and the food, wine and lovely draft beer was excellent. There is even a 'kinder menu' which my son enjoyed very much, and which the staff were happy to serve in the room to us for an early supper for him. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who were collectively wonderful. This extended to small touches such as offering to wash baby cups for us, and also, when we said that we wanted to eat in the bar, setting up one of the tables with a cloth, everything in fact, so we had the full restaurant experience sitting in comfy chairs in the bar area. One particular stand-out person was Sven, the barman, who was great fun, really friendly and very service minded, but to single him out alone would be unfair to his colleagues who were all first class.

Breakfasts were plentiful, high quality and served if you wished until 1100. I was also highly impressed with the fact that the quality and range of food was extensive, despite the hotel being very quiet (only 30 persons or so) throughout our stay. Standards did not slip one inch, and for that the Steigenberger deserves great credit.

Kaprun requires a hire car to get the best of the area, and as such we went off to Salzburg on one day (approx 01:20 by car) and up the Kitzsteinhorn mountain via cable cars on another day. So plenty to see and do, and for a relaxing late Autumn break, Kaprun and the Steigenberger are very highly recommended!

We have stayed in Steigenberger hotels in Austria before (in Krems and Vienna) and they have always been very good. This one is the most family friendly of the ones we have tried so far, and in terms of providing comfortable accommodation and great service would be hard to better.

My only criticisms (albeit they are very small, but hey, this is meant to be a balanced review!) is that the bedroom furniture could do with a refurbishment or an update (flaky varnish on wardrobes etc) and the swimming pool could have been a bit warmer - but these are only very minor issues which did nothing to spoil what was an excellent trip and a very happy family holiday. Well done Steigenberger!

“Fab Fab Fab!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Steigenberger for midterm and it was wonderful. The service is personalised and the staff helpful and friendly from chambermaids to Manager.
We had wonderful views from our room of the mountains and village.
The hotel is ideally situated for skiing, lifts to slopes just across the road from the hotel.
The wellness centre is very relaxing.
The food is especially good, from freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast to a wide range of dishes for dinner, all excellently presented

“Comfortable, great staff, great food.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2009

I stayed here with my son for 2 nights as part of a cycling holiday across part of Austria. The hotel was great - clean, tidy, modern - all of the staff were positive, polite and very helpful (and thankfully all spoke English so that I didn't have to get by with my broken german lingo).

There is an outdoor and indoor pool and small gym (cardio and a little resistance eqpt but no freeweights).

The breakfast buffet was fantastic - great quality and variety including smoked salmon and just about everything else you'd want for breakfast.

We only had one evening meal but, as expected, it was great quality.

I'd be very happy recommending this hotel.
