My nineteen year old son and I stayed at this lovely hotel for a long weekend in August. I am not usually a lakes and mountains kind of person, but I had recently taken up walking and cycling and Fuschl am See seemed to fit the bill just perfectly. I booked the Seewinkel based primarily on Tripadvisor reviews, but also as it offered free bike hire and boats for the lake.
We flew to Salzburg with Thomson and the flight was short and the transfer just 45 minutes or so. Upon arrival, it was already dark, and we were allowed straight into dinner. The dress code is quite casual and some were in jeans - worth noting because the photos on the website show people in posh attire - hence our overpacking a bit.
The food was consistently good and varied. Each night had a different theme, one night a gala dinner, and generally an extensive salad beforehand. Food choices were made in the morning and there was ample choice (though I am not sure what I would have fed to my 'chicken nugget and chips only' eating 8 year old had I brought her with us). I thought breakfast particularly delicious and was also varied with delicious bread and treats such as honey still in its honeycomb.
We had the most basic of rooms, but this was just fine with comfortable beds and free wi fi. It was sufficiently spacious for the two of us and had a view over the road and mountains. We had no problems with road noise. Had this been our main family holiday, I would have paid the supplement for a lake view as the view was simply stunning.
The walks around Fuschl are spectacular. We walked around the lake which was lovely and to St Gilgen which was brilliant. There is a bit more going on there and we had some gorgeous ice cream by Lake Wolfgang and caught the bus back. It was a seven mile or so walk, I would say. The walks are clearly way marked and there were enough walks, just around Fuschl, to keep ardent walkers happy for at least a week.
We also took advantage of the hotel boat hire and canoed across the lake a couple of times. Lake Fuschl is the most beautiful lake and there are no motorised boats so we felt we almost had the lake to ourselves. There are a number of nudist beaches around the lake, so be prepared to encounter naked people doing the backstroke! We also used bikes and toured around the town - also good fun.
Apart from a trip on the bus to Salzburg (gorgeous city but it rained so hard the day we were there that our visit didn't do it's justice) we stayed around Fuschl and enjoyed the facilities of this great hotel. The owners are so lovely and friendly and make an effort to chat to all guests and make them feel welcome. I can't recommend it highly enough.
