I stayed in the Cotton Exchange Hotel in January 2012 the night before leaving New Orleans on a cruise. The location is great -- just a short walk to Bourbon Street. The hotel seemed nice on the initial booking website (I booked it through hotels.com), but it wasn't as nice once we got there.
When we first arrived, there were 6 fire trucks and several police cars outside the hotel. We parked and walked to the hotel to check in, and found that apparently a frat party was going on and the elevator had malfunctioned and several students were stuck in the elevator for some time. They had been "rescued" by the time of our arrival. I can understand that elevators malfunction occasionally, but that was not the only problem.
Several reviews have mentioned that the staff attitude was dreadful; I did not find this to be the case. The front desk lady apologized for the chaos several times. Then we had to walk 5 floors up to our room. The room was clean; a bit on the small side but understandable for an old building. However, there were no towels in the room when we arrived. We went to Bourbon Street a short time after arrival, telling the front desk that there were no towels on the way out. When we returned 3 hours later, there were still no towels; when I called the front desk, they said they would have some sent right up. An hour and a half later, a maintenance man knocks on the door and he had a plunger; he had been told that our toilet was stopped up. He apologized; blamed the problem on the front desk, and said he would be back. Thirty minutes later we finally got towels to use the next morning.
We had requested no feathers in the room (such as feather pillows or duvets) due to an allergy. This was on the initial reservation request. All the pillows were feather. When we asked at the front desk, they said that there were no non-feather pillows and that we should have said something when we made the reservation. We informed them that we did but they said they didn't think they had any but they would let us know if they found any. Needless to say, we did not hear from them about the pillows, and my friend had to sleep on folded fleece jackets that night.
Supposedly valet parking was available for $30/night but we saw no valets and no place to stop for valet service. This was ok because we parked in a garage down the street for only $10/night (the garage was less than a block away).
The room and the hotel in general was OK but not at all worth the price. Customer service was severely lacking; I will not stay at this hotel again.
