“my favorite 'staycation' destination”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2010

the lookout has been my in-town getaway for the past four summers now, mainly just to lounge around their most exquisite pool area (a *saltwater* pool-huge plus!) and beat the oppressive summertime heat. very comfortable and clean rooms as well, each a different theme, the jungle room being my personal favorite. their bywater locale is in close proximity to several great restaurants--the joint (bbq), the legendary jack dempsey's (broiled seafood and steaks are their specialty), and baccahnal wine bar where they are always serving up some most delectable cuisine. there is a plethora of live music to choose from within a very short distance as well or one can check out one of the many neighborhood watering holes and mingle with some of the colorful characters that call this neighborhood home.

whitebread suburban types who are used to the corporate hotel experience should look elsewhere--this is NOT the place for you!! the lookout is best suited for those who are laid back, low-maintenance types--i.e., don't expect to be waited on hand and foot though standard services such as linen and towel swaps and room cleaning are provided however. bringing young children is highly discouraged as it's more of an adult scene here...nothing too debaucherous mind you, but take my word on this.

all in all, a great experience!! thanx l & j!! hope to see y'all soon!

“I felt like our every move was watched!”

So..where to start. We did arrive later than check time I picked. Was not able to get anyone on the phone to inquire about where place was located. It was getting dark and was having trouble. We got there and found our room after searching. The keys were taped on the door and there were these flying bugs all in our room. We left the air and a light on before we went out to eat. When we got back, the light/ air was off and someone had been our room to what we assumed was spraying the bugs (they were gone). Also when we got back there was this jeep that was butted up to my car. (Come to find out the owner of the place was the one driving that vehicle) Thankfully no scratches but no one bothered to own up to that one!!!! Did run into the owner but she did not bother to apologize for bumping my car or ask if we needed anything. I felt like I had to talk fast and ask for a receipt or I wasnt gonna get one. It was all she could do to get out of my presence. This interaction was on the morning we were going to leave but before that we couldnt find anyone for any service needs I think if we wanted to. There was this number we could supposedly call but no one answered. Anyway, the bed was comfy but the directv was terrible. There were very limited channels. If you dont care if it feels like you are being watched or dont need anything then this is the place for you. Well, the location is close to the French Market/Quarter so that was one plus. I just had a very uncomfortable feeling while I was there!

Watching them? LOL! Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but, we have much better things to do with our time. It's creepy to me that anyone would think that.

If the "owner couldn't get away fast enough" and there was "no one here to give them a receipt," who on earth was supposedly "watching their every move?" It doesn't make sense.

Please let me be clear. This is not a full-service hotel. This is a place for people who want privacy. With only four rooms it doesn't generate enough income to have someone here around the clock, and most guests appreciate having the place to themselves. We pay four part-time employees, to handle the inn. We (the owners) do not work here. We both have other jobs.

Someone should have answered the phone though. I will talk to the people who do work here about that. Our policy is, even if there's no one on the property, someone will always answer the phone and attend to guests immediately. Robyn's cell phone # is posted and she lives just blocks away. Kerry will answer the main #.

The jeep thing is just weird too. They clearly write that the jeep was parked when they got there, "no scratches," so why do they assume it was bumped? and they assume that I was the one who parked it there? I'm not the only person who uses it.

In the deep south, one or two nights a year the termites swarm. I don't know why anyone would go in their room and turn off the lights and ac. Again, I don't work here, but I can assure you, if someone was in there, it had nothing to do with "watching" them. Sorry.

Everyone here has better things to do than watching strangers. That's really creepy.

“Very nice, clean and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2010

I was recently at the Lookout Inn for a 2 night stay. I usually stay in the CBD, but due to a medical convention, had to look outside my regular hotel. I was bit familiar with the area due to previous business trips, so the other reviewers opinions of the dangerous neighborhood didn't really phase me. However, I do travel solo and safety is always on my mind. The Lookout Inn is a totally safe and secure spot for a traveler, solo or otherwise.

I stayed in the Jungle Room and it was lovely and really comfortable. Everything was clean: the bathroom, the sitting area, the bed and all linens. There was street noise, but it was regular everyday neighborhood stuff. It really felt like I was at a friend's house or my own apartment...not like a sterile hotel.

I had no contact with the owners or manager, but I found my key easily enough and they left a note with contact info if I needed anything, which I did not. Unlike another post, I was not watched over or hovered over at all. I came and went as needed.

The neighborhood is cool, non-suburban, eclectic. I am not too much of a wanderer of neighborhoods when I travel alone, but there were great places to eat within walking distance. No need to fear this location,

All in all, I would recommend The Lookout. You will enjoy being off the beaten path and seeing this cool side of New Orleans.

“excellent place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2009

The Lookout Inn is quirky, clean and extremely comfortable! The suites are are theme based (Elvis, Mission, etc.), surprisingly big and open, with high ceilings, and the cabana and little outdoor pool are an excellent places to relax. Plus, the inn is close to a couple of great local cafes. I highly recommend it, especially for those who enjoy boutique hotels and a little higher end off the beaten path travel experiences (a significant upgrade to the hostel experience).
